Keiran graduated with a physics degree wanting to teach. Fifteen empty spaces on a PGCE. Schools canceling classes for lack of teachers. Closed training buildings gathering dust. The resources exist. The students need teaching.

Fiscal rules are just "hard-coded" legacy constraints. We need to shift from accounting-first to resource-first models—optimizing for output capacity instead of arbitrary spreadsheet gaps. #MMT

Burnham can't do what he has talked about because he is as neoliberal as all the PMs since 1980. Things will not improve until we get a PM that understands #MMT so that he/she will be able to use the full power of government to benefit all of us.

"There's a black hole in the public finances."

A black hole is a gap between a forecast and a self-imposed fiscal rule. Westminster writes the rule, then discovers it has broken it. The real constraint is real resources, not the rule.

What would a real resource scoring procedure look like as a pre-budget exercise? I go through the steps here. It would be something for the new Fiscal Referees! #MMT #RealResourceScoring #Greenparty www.patreon.com/StephenHinto...

"We must show how we'd pay for it." Wrong frame. A currency issuer doesn't pay for spending with revenue. It creates money when it spends, destroys it when it taxes. The real question: do we have the real resources? Use Argument Builder to craft your answer.

Shein outsells Asos and we're told it's a customs loophole. Cute. The loophole is thin pay packets that can only stretch to £8 tops.

Westminster issues the pound. It can fund decent wages and a Job Guarantee.

"Feed your country or pay your creditors" only binds those who owe in currencies they can't issue. Dollar debt, yes. Sterling debt, no. The UK government issues the pound. Its limit is food and fuel, not a creditor's invoice.

Kaveh applied to train as a nurse. The training places existed. The hospitals needed nurses. But HM Treasury capped Health Education England's budget, and the answer was always: no funded places. A currency issuer treated as though it runs out of pounds.

The Phillips curve says you need unemployment to control inflation. That's the choice we're told we have to make. But it's a false one. The Job Guarantee replaces unemployment as the price anchor with paid public work at a fixed wage.

EU fiscal rules (SGP, debt brakes, ESM conditionality) constrain member-state spending; but they are political instruments, not economic laws. National central banks can create euros. The real limit on Eurozone action is inflation and real resources, not solvency.

Yes tax the FF companies to put them out of business but the government doesn't spend the tax it collects so spending money to help people to electrify their homes and transport (to help with the cost of energy) is something that the government can always do.

"Unlock billions" makes it sound like a vault. It's a timetable. Westminster issues the pound, so the £39bn waits on an election, not a bank balance. Housing associations are ready to build. The real limits are builders and land, not cash.

For the UK government that creates all the money it spends the cost is not the issue. What matters is the availability of the resources needed to achieve net zero.

Surely, Bailey must know and understand the #MMT description of government finances so why is he spouting this neoliberal nonsense?

@mmt-action.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 9:06 AM

"The state that issues the pound doesn't go looking for it. It spends it into existence. Self-financing, as advertised."

MMT Michael defends the self-financing state against Dunn. The binding limit is real resources, not a funding pot.

It's not the first time the Tories have got the numbers on a spreadsheet wrong. The last time resulted in 14 years of austerity.
They're completely incompetent. #MMT

@mmt-action.bsky.socialOct 9, 2026, 6:37 AM

A £500bn spreadsheet error is funny. The bigger error is the frame: net zero as a bill to "afford".

Pounds aren't scarce. Steel, grid engineers and installers are. Count those. Westminster issues the pound and can fund the lot.
