Petro-masculinity: Fossil Fuels and Authoritarian Desire Cara Daggett https://doi.org/10.1177/0305829818775817 Abstract As the planet warms, new authoritarian movements in the West are embracing a toxic combination of climate denial, racism and misogyny. Rather than consider these resentments separately, this article interrogates their relationship through the concept of petro-masculinity, which appreciates the historic role of fossil fuel systems in buttressing white patriarchal rule. Petro-masculinity is helpful to understanding how the anxieties aroused by the Anthropocene can augment desires for authoritarianism. The concept of petro-masculinity suggests that fossil fuels mean more than profit; fossil fuels also contribute to making identities, which poses risks for post-carbon energy politics. Moreover, through a psycho-political reading of authoritarianism, I show how fossil fuel use can function as a violent compensatory practice in reaction to gender and climate trouble.

Yet birds have infinitely creative and seemingly random changes perfectly choreographed into their movements. Changes which are instigated by.... Well, here you see again, how magical! Instigated by no one in particular; they just occur for all participants simultaneously, not even a leader or a director in sight. Yet imagine those human dancers making endless new patterns in their routines, unplanned, spontane- ous, without direction, and perfectly synchronized in the movement and steps among all the participants. Never going to happen, right? Yet we attribute the ability of the dolphins, fish, birds, and insects to do that to instinct, and then we do not have to try to understand it anymore. We give something a name and consider it job done. Then we say the idea of shared mind — a shared field of energy comprised of knowledge or, as I have been asserting, Experience (subjectivity, consciousness), which is the only thing that exists, being shared among multiple perceivers at the same time — which also might explain it, is fantastical. Yet this idea of consciousness shared is an idea that our consciousness research is leading us toward.4

One’s life is a ritual; it is unlived and unfelt, and one weighs the resulting despair against an imagined life, where all dreams come true ... much like fairy tales console children and religion tranquilizes adults. Finally, the fact that this is all a consequence of the fear of perinatal elements is reflected in the infant/baby faces pulling the caged matriarchal symbol. Another provocative aspect of this image, in the film, has to do with the fact of these hordes of infant-like city dwellers, who are depicted as impoverished and oppressed, and so enslaved. This indicates how these are suffering masses ... and that these bent- backed and huddled, laboring people are really just needy babies inside, driven by leftovers from their perinatal pasts. And again, the hero, in keeping with the Perseus way, is not on the ground with them (as in experiential therapy, the individual would actually be allowing the pains of birth to arise); he is not participating in their struggle (as the Tao of Funny God would have its hero doing); indeed, their suffering feeds his fake and artificial flight, just as the suffering masses and their incessant labors feed the displays, vanities, and artifices of the wealthy of any society — those who are not engaged in the actual struggle of humanity, but who, from their Olympian peaks, seek to manipulate and manage it at a distance and without “getting their hands dirty.”

So these genes of instinct evolved over millions of years some- how knew in advance, millions of years before now, what a particular flock of birds was going to do at a particular millisecond of time (and all birds in all flocks in every millisecond of time over the course of millions of years). Yet instinct is supposed to be the down-to-earth, real-world, “scientific” explanation for these incredible movements of birds, insects, and other similar planetmates. Instinct implies a kind of foreknowledge, premonition, or clairvoyance wilder than anything imaginable (and all contained within that microscopically small package of DNA), but somehow the idea of telepathy — what I am calling mind-sharing — is considered unscientific and too fantastical to be believed. The same with dolphins and fish. We see their precise synchro- nous movements, as they move perfectly together in swimming and jumping, and we say that is instinctive. We cannot know how they could possibly perfectly choreograph their movements far more pre- cisely than any contestants on Dancing with the Stars are able to, even after much training. In showing such a running away from evil as being transcendent, creative, and even Divine, Robbins does in his novel what is being done, in a “right-handed” way, by the movie, Joe Versus the Volcano. For it is all about flipping the script from the one we know, whose ending is clearly evil. We at least have a chance that way.

Note on Human “Rationality” In response to the idea I often put forth that our sciences are not only anthropocentric but also built on a highly questionable theological position — a Judeo-Christian one — that we are “God’s chosen species” a reader commented, “Our science is built on Greek rationalism.” The implication is that the bases of our sciences, disregarding that the idea of dominion over Nature is central to religious as well as scientific thinking, is that science is “rational” ... hence, irrefutable, it would seem. My response is that this purported “rationality” of humans, and their sciences, was overturned long ago by Freud and later by the experiential psychotherapies. Even quantum physics demonstrates that we do not view the world at all purely “objectively” in even the most “objective” of sciences.
