Happy birthday to Sophie Brahe (born either Aug 24, 1559 or Sept 22, 1556 -1643) 👩🏼‍🔬🧪🔭 #histsci horticulturalist, astronomer, genealogist, & alchemist with the gardens at her brother #astronomer Tycho Brahe’s Uraniborg estate, where she often assisted his research, alchemical tools & illustrations 🧵

My 11” x 14” linocut portrait of Sophie Brahe, a Renaissance aristocrat in headgear, ruff, dark clothing with medallion on a wide band and a long scarf or other thin fabric draped over her shoulders with her hands folded in front of her and alchemical vessels, printed in dark bronze ink, on a bronze background. In green behind her head is a map of the gardens at Uranienborg, with her head at the centre of the diamond shaped pale green knot garden (geometric planned gardens). This is surrounded by an orchard in darker green with semicircle bump outs on each side of the diamond. The stars of Cassiopeia from De stelle nova are printed in gold on top of everything; there are stars across her chest and ruff and in the garden and the large supernova is above her head

I don't watch a lot of TV news, but I sure hope the news channels are making hay out of "Secretary Bessent asserts (smugly) that Robert Oppenheimer was NOT a physicist."

Perhaps interviewing a Historian of Science.

Or, better, a Sixth Grader Who Has Learned How To Use An Encyclopedia.

She slept in a rosewood coffin, took mail through a hinged skull named Sophie, and shot a boa constrictor in her drawing room. Sarah Bernhardt, the most famous actress alive, also kept an alligator. She fed him champagne.

elected to the Geological Society of America in 1924; & elected VP of the GSA in 1930. She was associate editor of the American Geologist, 1896-1905. In 1906 she was added to the list of 100 most influential geologists by Men in Science, selected by her peers. #printmaking #histsci #linocut

The next category for #sciArtSeptember is category, starting with kaolin, a mineral which appears in several papers of US geologist & prof Florence Bascom (1862-1945). 👩🏼‍🔬⚒️🧪 #histsci She championed women’s education, & used polarizing microscopes for detailed petrographic analysis to show that rocks

My linocut portrait of geologist Florence Bascom as a young woman from neck up, in blue, looking at the viewer with her curly hair pulled back wearing a blouse with large lace collar on green vinyl. Behind her are two geological cross-sections with layers carved with different patterns to indicate different rock materials in black. Below on either side are two circular diagrams: these are thin sections of rhyolite printed in pale beige, brown, and black.

📣 A date for your diaries . . .

I’m looking forward to returning to Oxford's Museum of Natural History on Friday 6 November, 6–7:30pm.

It’s free, and everyone’s welcome—but booking is essential. 🌈🦋🗃️

6 August 1890, Auburn Prison. William Kemmler is strapped into an oak chair wired to a second-hand alternating dynamo its maker refused to sell. Seventeen seconds; the doctors call it; his chest heaves. The war of the currents at its ugliest.

Happy birthday to @aaas.org!

A starling in a Vienna shop whistled a concerto back at its composer, held a fermata he hadn't written, and sharpened one G to G#. Mozart bought the bird for 34 Kreuzer, transcribed its version into his household book, and wrote: Das war schön.

Day 20 #SciArtSeptember prompt is meander so I am sharing geologist & paleontogist Alice Wilson (1881-1964) with the Ottawa River. 🧪👩🏼‍🔬⚒️ #histsci

A job in the Mineralogy Division of the U of Toronto Museum was her entry into #geology. In 1909 as a museum assistant with Geological Survey of Canada

Linocut portrait of a young Alice Wilson with her hands under her chin printed in gold ink. Behind her is her own geological map of the Ottawa Valley with the different features on collaged translucent Japanese papers in raspberry, purple, yellow, pale blue, and beige in inks of similar but darker hues. “OTTAWA RIVER” is marked but the final R is obscured by her head.
