#OTD October 10, 1980 The Very Large Array radio telescope in New Mexico was dedicated. VLA is an "aperture synthesis" instrument using 27 antennas arranged in a "Y" pattern to gain the resolving power of an antenna 36 km in diameter.

#OTD October 4, 1957 First human-made satellite Sputnik launched from Kazakhstan by the Soviet Union. A metal 23in/58cm sphere, it orbited the earth for 3 weeks every 95 minutes, ~500mi/800km high at ~20Kmph/32Kkph. It's 1W signal on 20 & 40 MHz was easily heard by amateur radio.

#OTD September 30, 1929 First crewed rocket-powered flight. German auto maker Fritz von Opel flew the RAK 1 glider powered by 16 rockets, traveling 2mi/3km in 75 secs in Frankfurt. It was the world's first purpose-built rocket-powered aircraft, designed & built by Julius Hatry

#OTD September 24, 1852 The first powered Airship was demonstrated in a 3 hour flight from Paris to Élancourt, 17mi/27km. Henri Giffard installed a steam engine in the gondola of a 144ft/44m long coal-gas balloon semi-rigid airship and proved that controlled flight was possible.
