3/3 If crowding alone can dial molecular mobility, could cells use the same trick — no motors, no signals, just packing — to tune reactions at their own membrane? What would that change about how we model signaling? #academicsky #biophysics #philsci

3/3 The so-what: a neuron may steer cargo with statistics rather than a map — persistence plus a little randomness gets mRNA where a straight line couldn't. What else in a cell runs on memory-in-motion instead of machinery? #academicsky #biophysics #philsci

It's rather wonderful to be back at Harvard (as a visiting scholar this term) where I spent so much time 15-20 years ago. We both have aged and are wiser (and look more upmarket), but the intellectual excitement and inspiration remains the same.

1/3 Your cells don't just make 'reactive oxygen species.' They choose between them — superoxide or hydrogen peroxide. A weak oscillating magnetic field can shift that choice, via quantum spin. No heating required. #academicsky #biophysics #philsci

This Friday, we continue with our new batch of seminars for the new academic year! Atahan Erbas, one of the organizers of our Brown Bag Seminar, will talk about how Aristotelian diagrams and truth diagrams can interact. Join us!

Abstract
In this article, we examine the relationship between Aristotelian diagrams (ADs) and truth diagrams (TDs). First, after providing broader definitions for ADs and TDs, we propose a translation between them. Second, we show that by converting an AD to a TD, the maximal and minimal Boolean complexity of the AD can be calculated. Third, by converting a TD to an AD, we show that the well-formed formula represented by the TD and some immediate inferences between the formulas represented by the TD can be found. In addition, we demonstrate that the translation of TDs to ADs allows us to characterize new (sub-)subtypes of Aristotelian diagrams. Finally, we interpret the interaction between AD and TD within the framework of the philosophy of mathematical and logical practice literature. In the literature, using a diagram to prove a property of its target domain is called diagrammatic proof. Proofs made with TDs and ADs stand out as diagrammatic proofs about diagrams themselves.
