At Piercebridge, County Durham, you can see the remains of the Roman bridge over the River Tees and the 3rd cent. fort built to guard it. But was there an earlier fort there?

Roman tomb on Dere Street, near High Rochester, Northumberland.

#RomanBritain #Archaeology #History (see Alt.)

Dere Street Roman Road
was built by occupying Romans in AD 7981. It was reused during the time of the Antonine Wall, some 60 years later. It also found use in 1298, when King Edward
of England marched his forces north along Dere Street to the Battle of Falkirk.
A Roman cemetery is an area of ground set aside for the disposal, celebration and remembrance of the dead. Under Roman law it was illegal to bury or burn the dead within a town, so throughout the Roman
occupation
cemeteries were set up outside the settlement to which they belonged, usually alongside an approach road. The monument is situated on a rocky eminence some 400m SE
of High Rochester Roman fort close to Petty Knowes farmhouse, and comprises a Roman cemetery located on either side of Dere Street Roman road. Around I00 small barrows have been identified, these being largely low circular mounds averaging 3-4m dia. some of which also exhibit a shallow external ditch and low external bank.

The miniseries finale!

"Wonders of the Wall - Hadrian's Horses"

We've gone fully #equestrian, inspired by Corbridge Town & the Roman Army Museum at Magna Fort. How did these noble animals fare on Rome's northern frontier? 🐎 🐎

If you want to learn more about the #Roman fort gate and walls of #London and about #RomanBritain in general. Tours can be booked through #LondonMuseum. (All opinions expressed on this page are solely my own and do not necessarily reflect the views of London Museum).

Between 200 and 220 CE the #Romans incorporated the fort into walls covering the entire northern area of Londinium. The #Romans thickened the walls to create a walkable perimeter. You can see a seam left by this upgrade here. #RomanBritain #EnglishHeritage

One of the #mysteries of the #Roman fort gate, purple sandstone in the foundations. Though not as valuable as purple marble, purple sandstone wasn’t cheap, so it’s odd that they chose to put it below ground level like this. #RomanBritain #EnglishHeritage

The #Romans built the fort’s gates with two towers flanking them. Each contained a guard house in the base. #RomanBritain #EnglishHeritage

Strips of tegula, terracotta roof tiles, run in strips throughout the wall, adding strength, helping to level the structure, and creating an imposing aesthetic. #RomanBritain #EnglishHeritage

The Roman fort gate inside a car park near the #BarbicanCentre.

#London was once a walled city. This began with a #Roman fort, probably built on the orders of Emperor Hadrian in 120 CE. The Romans later expanded it to cover the entire city of #Londinium north of the #Thames. #RomanBritain

There's a Roman tombstone in that church (St George's Fordington) as well. Memorial to Carinus (RIB 188), who died aged 50.

Autumn (with his rake) from the Four Seasons mosaic at the excellent Yorkshire Museum in York seems seasonally appropriate today. The staff positively encouraged me to walk on this - although shoes aren't allowed.

Beneath Bath’s famous Georgian Assembly Rooms, archaeologists have uncovered Roman ditches, pottery, coins, glass, animal bones — and part of a military helmet.

What was happening here nearly 2,000 years ago?
