Monumental Roman inscription, found next to a Roman villa near Alt-Inden (D).
Sabi(na) was one of the heirs (H = heredes) of the deceased, who according to testament (T) had to have the funerary column erected, to which this inscription presumably belonged.

Special K. For #EpigraphyTuesday, we look at two instances of the archaic K in the word EVOKATVS, normally EVOCATVS, recalled veterans who were "called out" of retirement to re-enlist, with many privileges for doing so. This one, Ingenuus, was a career soldier. #AncientBluesky 🏺

FUNERARY MONUMENT FOR AN EVOCATUS, 200-250 CE. CASINO DELL'AURORA LUDOVISI

A weathered marble funerary altar standing outdoors, surrounded by the fallen leaves of autumn. The front face features a carved relief of a standing Roman soldier wearing a heavy military cloak and proudly holding the baton of his rank. Below is a Latin inscription which translates to: "To the departed shades. For Quintus Vetius Ingenuus, veteran of the Third Praetorian Cohort, from the province of Lower Germany. Marcus, an evocatus (recalled veteran), his heir and fellow citizen, made this for a well-deserving man." Unlike many Roman epitaphs, Ingenuus's sole heir and dedicator is a fellow soldier and countryman. This suggests a life wholly dedicated to military service, devoid of a traditional family structure. According to epigraphic analysis, the monument dates to the first half of the third century CE.

Tudhaliya IV and Kurunta of Tarhuntassa in 1235BCE. With this treaty Tudhaliya promises the sovereignty of Tarhuntassa and another territory to Kurunta and his sons for the future, although Kurunta is advised to not want to imitate Tudhaliya's "Great Kingdom".

There's a Roman tombstone in that church (St George's Fordington) as well. Memorial to Carinus (RIB 188), who died aged 50.

Fresh from this morning's press preview at the #Oppian Hill for #EpigraphyTuesday. This massive lead fistula supplied the Baths of #Trajan. The relief stamp THERM TRAIANI prevented illegal siphoning, while the scratched LXX denotes its enormous size or weight. #AncientBluesky 🏺

LEAD WATER PIPE FROM THE BATHS OF TRAJAN, EARLY C2 CE. MUSEO DELLE TERME DI TRAIANO

This photograph shows a massive section of a Roman lead water pipe, known as a fistula aquaria, displayed on a bed of porous stones. Along the top edge of the pipe, an inscription in raised relief reads THERM TRAIANI. This served as an official administrative stamp designating the water supply for the Baths of Trajan. This was a necessary bureaucratic measure to prevent private citizens from illegally tapping into the imperial infrastructure. Immediately to the right of the relief text, the Roman numeral LXX is roughly incised into the lead. This number, carved by the plumber who manufactured the section, likely designates the conduit as a fistula septuagenaria, indicating its standard capacity based on the width of the lead sheet before rolling, or it records the weight of the pipe section in Roman pounds. Both readings underscore the immense volume of water required to operate what was the largest bath complex in the world upon its dedication in 109 CE.
