"🎵 Oh, What A Bountiful Mornin' 🎵"
Redwing (Turdus iliacus) with plenty of berries to choose from at Grimbister, #Orkney, on Thursday.

#OnThisDay #OrkneyBirding ... three county firsts found today: yesterday's Siberian Blue Robin in Shetland is just a day out from Orkney's first (and Britain's second); the Rufous-tailed Robin makes an amazing robin double but the latter was sadly found dead; and a Red-eyed Vireo. #rarebirds
"Why? Just Beak-ause"
Puffin (Fratercula arctica) on Westray, #Orkney, in July.
For today's #BirdOfTheDay theme of #BestBeaks.

On this day #OrkneyBirding ... the county's (and British) first Pechora Pipit was only unearthed recently during a museum review of Red-throated Pipits. A day for a rare thrush or bunting and what a day for Great Grey Shrike! Mirroring the national decline, GGS no longer annual here. #rarebirds
On this day #OrkneyBirding ... Veery is the real standout find today and is the first of two Orkney records of this rare Nearctic Catharus thrush. The Eyebrowed Thrush is the third of our seven records. Another good day for pipits and wagtails and the usual cast of Nearctic waders. #rarebirds
On this day #OrkneyBirding ... with no confirmed records since 2009, Ruddy Duck is one of the standout finds today. Syke's Warbler is the second of our two county records (which were in consecutive years). Also a good day for finding Olive-backed Pipit and Rustic Bunting. #rarebirds
A good few days of finds for me, this smart Baird’s Sand on Sandsheen was my personal highlight, but a Red-throated Pipit at Westness was a close second!
On this day #OrkneyBirding ... Western Sandpiper was new to #Orkney and remains the sole record of this Nearctic peep. The Spotted Sandpiper is only the second of three county records. Three Citrine Wagtails and four Olive-backed Pipits are a standout run of records. #rarebirds
On this day #OrkneyBirding ... a county first Barolo's Shearwater from North Ronaldsay. The second record of American Pipit remains the sole record away from North Ronaldsay. Smew has always been scarcer than you'd think up here w/ just 90 documented records (cf 170 records of Pec Sand). #rarebirds
On this day #OrkneyBirding ... Black-throated Thrush is the first for #Orkney with seven subsequent records, the most recent in 2025. Surprisingly, nearly half of the county's 21 Melodious Warblers have been away from North Ronaldsay.
#rarebirds
On this day #OrkneyBirding ... the first county record of Eyebrowed Thrush is the standout find today. From the opposite direction the last two of our four Yellow-billed Cuckoos were found. The Northern Harrier became a long-stayer recorded off and on into 2017.

Not quite all on North Ron 😉 #OrkneyBirding
On this day #OrkneyBirding ... the expected showing of Nearctic waders include the first record of Long-billed Dowitcher. Three Honey-buzzards found on this day in 2000 sadly included a moribund bird. 13/19 of today's finds come from @northronbirdobs.bsky.social.
#rarebirds
On this day #OrkneyBirding ... the first county record of Pallas's Grasshopper Warbler (all three records have been on North Ronaldsay). The Gull-billed Tern is the most recent of the four county records. Likewise, the River Warbler is the most recent of three records.
#rarebirds
On this day ... the 1992 Yellow-breasted Bunting was the first of five found in the '90s. Also a notable date for Great Snipe and Citrine Wagtail. Quite typically for here, 17 of 25 birds found on this day were found in the North Isles, and 10 of them on North Ronaldsay. #OrkneyBirding #rarebirds
On this day . . .
Lesser Kestrel at @northronbirdobs.bsky.social is by far the stand out find in Orkney on this day among the expected cast of waders. The Yellow-breasted Bunting was the fifth of nine records here (all on the farther flung isles), the last in 2003.
Weather shite so I continued w/ something I started some time ago, producing a list of Orkney scarce and rare bird records in calendar order. So here's what has been found in Orkney on 19 September. Cretzschmar's Bunting the standout find - 2nd county & 4th British record. #OrkneyBirding #rarebirds
"Black Beauty"
Black Swan (Cygnus atratus) on the Loch of Harray, #Orkney, last weekend.
