#OnThisDay #OrkneyBirding ... the county's first Western Black-eared Wheatear was found on, where else, North Ronaldsay. Bewick's Swan is also a standout rarity here with none recorded since 2014. The Woodlark was one of three found on uninhabited Auskerry in 1912 (1) and 1913 (2). #rarebirds

Surely that Nutcracker dam will burst soon and one will make it across the Channel. I don't know what the build up was ahead of the 1998 Kent bird (the last to make it here). Orkney and Shetland have only one record each so I won't hold my breath for an #OrkneyBirding one. #rarebirds

#OnThisDay #OrkneyBirding ... the county's first Rose-breasted Grosbeak and Radde's Warbler were recorded. The Pied wheatear is the most recent of seven records and so long overdue for a reoccurrence. Five Great Grey Shrikes have been found today! How times change. #rarebirds

#OnThisDay #OrkneyBirding ... the Red-rumped Swallow is the earliest of the three Orkney autumn records. Three Red-flanked Bluetails sees the start of the main finding period for this species - the Birsay record is notable as is one of only four found away from the North Isles. #rarebirds

On this day #OrkneyBirding ... the county's (and British) first Pechora Pipit was only unearthed recently during a museum review of Red-throated Pipits. A day for a rare thrush or bunting and what a day for Great Grey Shrike! Mirroring the national decline, GGS no longer annual here. #rarebirds

On this day #OrkneyBirding ... Veery is the real standout find today and is the first of two Orkney records of this rare Nearctic Catharus thrush. The Eyebrowed Thrush is the third of our seven records. Another good day for pipits and wagtails and the usual cast of Nearctic waders. #rarebirds

On this day #OrkneyBirding ... Western Sandpiper was new to #Orkney and remains the sole record of this Nearctic peep. The Spotted Sandpiper is only the second of three county records. Three Citrine Wagtails and four Olive-backed Pipits are a standout run of records. #rarebirds

On this day #OrkneyBirding ... a county first Barolo's Shearwater from North Ronaldsay. The second record of American Pipit remains the sole record away from North Ronaldsay. Smew has always been scarcer than you'd think up here w/ just 90 documented records (cf 170 records of Pec Sand). #rarebirds

On this day #OrkneyBirding ... Black-throated Thrush is the first for #Orkney with seven subsequent records, the most recent in 2025. Surprisingly, nearly half of the county's 21 Melodious Warblers have been away from North Ronaldsay.

On this day #OrkneyBirding ... the first county record of Eyebrowed Thrush is the standout find today. From the opposite direction the last two of our four Yellow-billed Cuckoos were found. The Northern Harrier became a long-stayer recorded off and on into 2017.
