Heading down to London tomorrow, where I’ll be giving two papers on two consecutive days (one for the V&A on maritime imaginaries in British musical theatre; the other an introduction to the shanty for the Royal College of Music Museum). Should be a lot of fun! ⚓️🎶 #seashanties #maritimehistory

Have you ever seen inside the legendary Ridgetown Freighter?

This historic Great Lakes ship now guards the harbor, but very few get to see what remains hidden behind its steel hull. Pretty cool IMO.

1/x A man is remembered for two contrasting legacies: heroically saving the US Declaration of Independence from flames, while his mismanagement of US lighthouses left the American coast shrouded in darkness and filled with shipwrecks. This is Stephen Pleasonton. A small 🧵 #maritimehistory

Coming Tuesday, "The Finest Hours: SS Pendleton & SS Fort Mercer." Feb. 18th, 1952, both ships broke in half during a vicious nor'easter off Cape Cod, prompting daring Coast Guard rescues. Both ships were converted T2 tankers from the WW2 era.

To my great delight one student in my Seafarers class knew what this object was! Led to a great material history discussion for first day. What a privilege to have this job. #MaritimeHistory

Photo of an office bookshelf, with the usual variety of objects, such as buttons, bits of exotic wood, chinchona bark in a jar, and most importantly in the centre a green glass pyramid on a squared off base.

Interested in Cochrane? Then this is a MUST!

And don't forget to listen to the audio excerpt from A Dangerous Game recounting Cochrane's attack on the French fleet at Basque Roads in 1809!
