Lowestoft's fishing industry peaked around 1911. This aerial view shows the Trawl Dock, Hamilton Dock and yacht marina. The harbour began in 1831, when a channel linked the North Sea to Lake Lothing, and expanded as the town's fishing fleet grew. #Lowestoft #MaritimeHistory

1/26 Find a dead whale on an English beach, and it is not yours. It belongs to the King. A law from around 1324, still on the books, makes whales and sturgeon "royal fish". Moby-Dick, 175 years old this month, gives the rule a whole chapter. #maritimehistory

Here is one of the best-known depictions of the Battle of Lepanto in October 1571.

(Lepanto is today's Nafpaktos in western Greece; Ottoman Turkish: İnebahtı)

The image represents the Holy League’s victory over the Ottoman fleet.
mage: Ignazio Danti, Battle of Lepanto, c. 1580, fresco, Gallery of Geographical Maps, Vatican Museums, Vatican City, based on a 1572 engraving by Fernando Bertelli.
The Ottoman conquest of Cyprus was the immediate trigger for the formation of the Holy League.

The victory has traditionally been portrayed as a decisive triumph of Christian Europe over Ottoman expansion and a symbolic turning point in the Mediterranean.
Recent scholarship has challenged the traditional portrayal of Lepanto as a decisive turning point. It has emphasized its limited immediate strategic consequences and the Ottomans’ rapid reconstruction of their naval power.
Here are three references:
On the conventional narrative and how this interpretation was itself shaped by early modern Catholic political and religious discourse:
Stefan Hanß. War and Peace: Shaping Politics in Reformation Germany after the Battle of Lepanto. (2017).
On Lepanto's long-lasting impact on European literature, art, diplomacy, and representations of Muslims:

Journal of Iberian and Latin American Studies, Issue 1: Seeing the Turk after Lepanto: visions of the Ottomans and Islam in Spain and Italy. 2018.
On the rapid reconstruction of the Ottoman fleet after L. within 6 months:

1/25 The night of 9 October 1799, a British frigate ran onto a sandbank off the Dutch islands of Vlieland and Terschelling. Some 240 people were aboard; one survived. She carried gold and silver worth around a million pounds. Most of it is still down there. #maritimehistory #otd
