At 6.30am, as lifeboats were being lowered, the ship was hit amidships by a third torpedo. She broke in two and rapidly sank, leaving the lifeboats struggling to pick up men from the water. 58 men were lost. She had been sunk by U.96 (the only warship sunk by that U-boat). #RoyalNavy #NavalHistory

Conditions were so bad that no nearby vessels could assist, and she rapidly broke up, with just one survivor from about 240 people on board. 9 Oct 1715 (O.S.) // 10-gun sloop HMS Jamaica ran aground and was wrecked off Grand Cayman while being towed by a merchant sloop after a storm had left her badly damaged. The loss was blamed on the merchantman's pilot, who chose the wrong channel through which to tow her. #RoyalNavy #NavalHistory

The Margate was able to catch up with the sloop, ordered her to stop and sent in a boat, but then began to drift and shortly afterwards ran aground on a reef. She began to flood and despite every effort being made could not be saved. She was abandoned with no loss of life. #RoyalNavy #NavalHistory

She was forced by the storm across the Sound of Mull, rolled over and was wrecked on Eilean Rubha an Ridire. From about 130 on board, five men and a boy survived. Her wreck has seen extensive archaeological investigation since discovery in 1973. (Image: Wikimedia Commons) #RoyalNavy #NavalHistory
