Six Spotted Redshank was the biggest patch count for quite a while, but today was all about House Martin passage,
827 passed through in just 4 hours — a new record day count for the patch #NEbirding

Curious to hear what any #lovegulls folk think about the identification of this scraggy individual at Shotton (Northumberland 11 September 2026).

Birding is really good for wellbeing (sometimes). A couple of hours on the patch provided Whinchat, Merlin (year ✅!), Greenshank, 2 Ruff, Common Sandpiper and a dapper Spotted Redshank (a really good bird in Cramlington). Some of these in the attached iPhone video 📽️

Caspian Gull at Newton Pool briefly last night whilst conducting Operation Spotted Crake. The local gull roosts are at the Long Nanny (can't be arsed to walk up there !) and offshore on the Emblestones (distant/difficult to view). Caspian Gull remains a patch rarity.

Fab evening up the reservoirs with Juv Peregrine, ♀ Merlin, Hobby (9th sighting this summer!), 3x Little Owl, Tawny Owl, 2x Barn Owl and 2nd Short-eared Owl of the year. Also a year ✔️Winchat - like London buses there was about 10 in the same field. Magic 👍 #NEBirding

2026 green patch yearlist thread, 8 September; #125. Two Spotted Flycatchers in Exhibition Park; probably the most reliable site on my patch for them.

Once the commonest breeding summer visitor in the area; now a scarce passage migrant.

Two Spotted Flycatchers in Exhibition Park, Newcastle.

First of this once-abundant species I've seen this year, anywhere.

Info back from the Stavanger Ringing Scheme regarding the recent Red-backed Shrike at Low Newton. Ringed 10 days earlier on Norway's south coast, it covered 657km/408 miles to reach Low Newton. It's the first ever recovery of a Norwegian ringed Red-backed Shrike in the UK !
