Whilst headlands in the SW were awash with passage migrants yesterday, SML, in its SW facing bay, had its quietest day of the year – one of the penalties of the location and settled calm weather. Just 12 new birds were trapped, the highlight being 3 Firecrest. #birdringing #ukbirding #ornithology

Yellow-browed Warbler trapped and ringed at the Tin Church (Low Newton) this morning.

A few other birds were dropping in here, mainly Chaffinches and Siskins but also 2 Redwings. A fair number of Chiffchaffs, Blackcaps, Robins and Song Thrushes still around the scrub too.

For the first time ever on the Calf...

Two Great Spotted Woodpecker were caught in a season! Amazingly, they were both caught on the same day! It provided a nice comparison between female and male as well.

This represents the 18th Calf record.

It's great when birding throws nice surprises your way, today was certainly one of those days. Uninspiring westerlies and then... Subalpine Warbler ! No dropped feathers but a poo sample recovered from the bag so🤞.

Then in the evening... Cuckoo !

Been in Facebook, 1st time in ages. Tries to tempt me back w/ a memory of old #birdringing Funnel Trap out on the #Medway estuary tidal island of Oakham marsh, within the old Kingsnorth PS.

Reverend, in his element, explaining why it wasn't a Heligoland Trap (an HT must have a dog-leg). Happy days.

Facebook post from 2011, Reverend Jones explaining how a Funnel trap works.

(Convo at time w/ an Icklesham regular ringer- we used to travel up to n Kent to gain experience ringing waders.)

Antikythira hosts the largest known breeding colony of Eleonora’s Falcons in Europe and one of the largest in the world. I probably would never have had the chance to see it were it not for the generosity of Trevor Squire. #birds #Antikythira #eleonorasfalcon #birdringing

One of my fondest memories of knowing Trevor Squire was when he invited me to join his ringing team on a trip to the Antikythira Bird Observatory. Great birds and great companymemories I’ll always treasure. #p1000 #birds #bto #birdringing
