The latest episode of the “Hittin’ The Bricks with Kathleen” podcast is One-Place Studies: Meet Denise Cross. An enjoyable half hour chat about #OnePlaceStudies, with lots of references to Denise’s Granville, Washington County One-Place Study in the state of New York. #OnePlaceWednesday

This #OnePlaceWednesday I’m planning ahead - to next year’s #AtoZbloggingChallenge. I’ve already decided my theme, & have lots of ideas for topics. Now just need to slot them into letters & hope I don’t end up with too many blanks!

Roger Livermore’s Great and Little Livermere One-Place Study is a #OnePlaceStudy in #Suffolk which is linked to a #OneNameStudy – the place name Livermere and the toponymic surname Livermore are derived from the Anglo-Saxon Laefermere or Levermere, the lake with flag iris. #OnePlaceWednesday

Image: Two portrait-format colour photos combined to make a single image. Left: View across a lake or mere, on the far side of which there is woodland, and a church with a tower. Right: A closer view of the tower of the church of Saints Peter and Paul, built with rubble flint and topped with a wooden belfry which has a pyramidal roof. The church, now an empty shell, stands amidst rough grassland with trees behind it.

Newly-registered with us is Stephen Clark’s Marske (Swaledale) One-Place-Study. The website for this North Yorkshire #OnePlaceStudy has an overview of parish history, plus pages on population, the church, the Hutton family, temperance, and the railway that never was, and more. #OnePlaceWednesday

Buildings named or labelled in Marske village include the Manor House, a School, St Edmund's Church, and the Rectory. Buildings are shaded in pink, the river in blue, and roads in a buff colour.

Ashton Keynes One-Place Study has now been registered with us. Rosemary Chalmers has been interested in this #Wiltshire village for over 30 years as her maternal grandmother, the only grandparent she ever had the opportunity to get to know, was born there. #OnePlaceWednesday

Ashton Keynes One-Place Study.
Image: A colour photo of part of a village, taken at sunset. In the middle of the picture, running back from the foreground, is a brook, on either side of which there is a strip of grass then a gravelled path. On the right there is a stone wall, likely enclosing a garden, i which there is a large tree. On the left is a stone-built, two-bay, two storey cottage, with a chimney at either end of its roof and a dormer window. Another stone cottage, of just one storey, stands beyond that, and to the right of that building, on the other side of the brook, is a more elaborate three-bay, two-storey stone cottage. Behind the cottages are trees, with a sky lit up with sunset colours of yellow and orange, which are reflected in the brook.

There are reports of her committee as she tried to find employment for the Belgians living in Bucks. The local employers were suffering a loss of workers due to conscription, but the language barrier appeared to be too great. In Colnbrook the local munitions #OnePlaceWednesday

Gatliff Close Heritage Project Team has registered Gatliff Buildings, Westminster One-Place Study with us! As Gatliff Close (originally Gatliff Buildings) marks its 160th anniversary in 2027, this #OnePlaceStudy explores the history of the place and the people who called it home. #OnePlaceWednesday

The photos are from left to right: A small black and white picture of a bearded, bespectacled man; a black and white photo of a four-storey housing block, with a group of people (mostly children) standing on the open ground in front of it; a colour photo, presumably taken from the top of a taller building nearby, of the same building; a colour photo showing a street sign for Gatliff Road, SW1.

My best move for #Rillington #OnePlaceWednesday? Involving villagers near & far. They talk to me & each other, filling gaps in records. Today brought memories of one of the last trains to stop at Rillington & of Ray Buckton ASLEF shovelling coal for a local driver.

By 1851 a new community was living around #Rillington Station: former labourers, an ostler, a coach proprietor, railwaymen & families plus a bonesetter! The records prove where they came from & where the railway took them next. 🚂. #OnePlaceWednesday
