Surprisingly good seawatching at Boulmer this afternoon - in 2 hrs:
1 Sabine’s Gull, 1 Balearic, 7 Sooty & 7 Manx Shearwater, 1 Pomarine, 5 Long-tailed, 17 Arctic, 4 Great & 7 unidentified small Skuas, 1 Med & c400 Little Gulls, 2 Pintail, 2 Brent, c195 Teal. Curlew Sandpiperon the beach #NEbirding
Can anyone comment on the *Aythya* at Cresswell Pond today? I had it (her?) down as a Scaup due to structure, lack of any tuft, small and central 'nail' on the bill. But it seemed dark in odd places and a bit on the small side and I wasn't so certain. If Scaup, which sex and plumage? Thx

A swing in the wind direction today (SE) and it's started to feel a bit more 'autumny' with Meadow Pipits, Reed Buntings and various finches calling overhead. Unexpected bird of the day was Great White Egret (x5 !), heading north.
Some easterlies forecast this coming week.🤞
Rather crappy pic (250 m range across the Tyne) of an odd graellsii Lesser Black-back Gull (unless it's something else!) with definitely pink legs (no hint of yellow!) at Elswick on Saturday morning for #SuperSeabirdSunday

Budle Bay, late afternoon - 3 Spotted Redshanks, 8+ Greenshanks and a very distant Great White Egret (5th record, says Budle guru @budlebirder.bsky.social), but the Brents were too distant to pick out the Black Brant #NEbirding
A mixed day… great to have a Baird’s Sandpiper buzz me on Goswick beach, but frustrating not to be able to refind it. Presumably the bird from Guille Pt earlier in the week. Best of the rest was an entertainingly grey Little Stint, Merlin, Marsh Harrier, Merlin, 1186 Pinkfeet arriving #NEbirding
2026 green patch yearlist thread, 26 September; #126 with this Garganey at Swalla, found by SPP. Scarce on the patch in recent years, my first since May 2022; before that, they used to be near-annual.

While Longhoughton Steel remained Lapland Bunting-less this morning, compensation was had at Druridge with the finding of Cattle Egret and further views of the Pectoral Sandpiper. A Grey Plover was nice too.

10 years to the day since a mad post-work dash to Anstruther, Fife to see this Brünnich's Guillemot. Visible from the car as we pulled into the carpark, it gave fantastic views with no real indication that it was moribund. Sadly the bird was found dead the next day 🙁 #NEBirding
Peregrine this afternoon 😁

A couple of nice migrants on the patch this morning, a peachy Wheatear at Newton Point followed by a stonking Hawfinch near the Tin Church !

Amazingly, yesterday's grey partridge made another appearance at Tynemouth today! At dawn it was running around on the short grass and concrete paths at Sharpness, about 700m away from where it was yesterday, before disappearing into the long grass once again... #nebirding #patchbirding
Local Barn Owl has been showing really well this week 👍 #NEBirding
Gorgeous 1st winter Wheatear at Whittle Dene this afternoon. Also 2 Dunlin (yr ✔️) with 2 Ringed Plover and first Pintail of the Autumn. Red Kite getting mobbed for 2nd day. #NEBirding
A Ruff at RSPB Saltholme am. Pools Hide. #NEBirding
