A very good day on Skerries. The Arctic Warbler was too camera shy, so here are Little Bunting and RB Fly. I'd put the camera away when a Pallid Harrier went straight down Housay isle towards Whalsay. A Stonechat and an inferior picture of the day's flava wag also attached. #BirdingScotland

I also wasn't aware that there are year round resident Redwings found in the Highlands either side of the Great Glen. See this RSPB map. #BirdingScotland www.rspb.org.uk/birds-and-wi...

Map showing the distribution of Redwings in the UK and Ireland. The map is mainly blue showing where birds are found overwintering, but there are green parts either side of the Great Glen showing where there are resident birds.

A couple of days ago in Rutherglen a small flock of long-tailed brownish birds flew overhead and disappeared from view behind some trees.

The view was fleeting but my first thought was: Redwings. Now I see reports in the Clyde area of Redwings around, so maybe I was right. #BirdingScotland

My early-morning circuit had the whiff of a false dawn, though Pink-feet were still moving. Later I managed to see a Little Bunting at Quendale and the Buff-breast again at Fleck. After tomorrow’s wind and rain, the end of the week might prove interesting. #BirdingScotland

A change in wind direction to a gale force south-easterly produced Barra's first Yellow-browed Warbler of the year at Cuithir. It feels like proper autumn now. #birdingscotland

A classic view of Knot is of huge flocks swirling over mudflats but at Girdle Ness we enjoy them in smaller numbers, often perching on shoreline rock outcrops that set off the juveniles' scalloped, peach-tinted charm.

It's the time of year when Yellow-browed Warblers find their way to lonely coastal sycamores. This was one of two along the north side of Girdle Ness today.

A Yellow-browed Warbler is perched on a horizontal twig, with its back to us and looking upwards. Some browning sycamore leaves are in the background.

It took several minutes of making pishing noises to coax out the grey shape in the undergrowth at Creachen into something identifiable: our second Barred Warbler on Barra so far this autumn. Sadly this was as good as the views got! #birdingscotland
