For this #MosaicMonday we look up into the spectacular presbytery vault of San Vitale in #Ravenna. To me, the Ravenna #mosaics are an astonishing collection, the last magnificent product of late antiquity. But whose empire does this shimmering C6 CE ceiling actually represent? #AncientBluesky 🏺

PRESBYTERY VAULT MOSAICS, C. 547 CE. BASILICA OF SAN VITALE, RAVENNA

A view looking straight up into the vaulted ceiling of the presbytery. At the apex within a starry medallion is the Lamb of God. The central wreath is supported by four white robed angels, a visual inheritance from classical winged Victories. They stand upon blue globes, an ancient symbol of cosmic dominion. The vault sections are filled with a lush paradise of acanthus vines and birds, echoing Augustan imagery of abundance. This shared classical vocabulary reflects the complex political reality of C6 CE Ravenna. The basilica was begun under Ostrogothic rule, a regime using Roman art to present themselves as theoretically still part of the empire. When Justinian consecrated the church in c. 547 CE he did not have to replace the Ostrogothic aesthetic. The Gothic kings' official style was already Roman, allowing this final flowering of late antiquity to bridge two competing empires.

Following last week's post, and prompted by a comment made then, I'm sharing two more details from Ras al-Hillal in Cyrenaica (modern Libya) to document this floor. On the left, a cup with a ? dove. On the right, a ? gazelle and a ? fruit tree.

Ancient mosaic showing a damaged cup with a rectangular base and two handles. A small bird, probably a dove, perches on the left handle. There are slabs of marble at the top of the photo.A panel of ancient mosaic which is disintegrating. On the left, the remains of an animal, perhaps a gazelle. Its front legs are visible at lower left of the photo. On the right, the trunk and top part of an attractive ? fruit tree. Loose tesserae are scattered around.

Love this dramatic shot, this mosaic must have stunned London when it was found in 1869! #MosaicMonday

This is the 'Bucklersbury Pavement' from the early 200s CE, probably part of a wealthy villa or baths in the centre of old Londinium

Everything old is new again. This #SpoliaSunday we're in #Garbatella, built as a working-class suburban quarter of #Rome in the first part of the C20. Atop the Scuola d'Infanzia, the architect Innocenzo Sabbatini set this #sarcophagus. But all is not as it seems. #AncientBluesky 🏺

INNOCENZO SABBATINI.
SARCOPHAGUS OF THE MUSES, 1927-1931, FROM A C2-C3 CE ORIGINAL. CASA DEI BIMBI, GARBATELLA

Here atop a modern building in the working-class district of Garbatella, a surprising sarcophagus looms over the preschool built by the brilliant young architect Innocenzo Sabbatini. It's a sarcophagus of the Muses, a style popular in the C2 and C3, but it's a cast. The school was built around a C16 nucleus, the villa Sergardi, and the two side wings, of Sabbatini's creation, were inventively decorated with classical imagery. The Muses of this sarcophagus weren't chosen by accident: they represent the Fascist regime's desire to give the empire-building spirit back to the Romans, reminding them of the great culture these little children had inherited. The columns on either side and the lintel were meant to evoke the relaxing otium of a Renaissance villa, where the gardens would be full of grape-bearing pergolas. This preschool is a compendium of the only periods the Fascists admired. But it's also beautiful.
