“Voters hadn’t simply abandoned their standards; they’d become aggrieved parties renegotiating a contract. And they had no problem negotiating it with a candidate who lacked decency because, to them, he seemed to be hiding nothing.”

Ten years ago today, we heard the most damning recording in modern politics—and then quickly discovered that "damning" no longer meant "disqualifying."

Had I not been writing a piece on the 10th anniversary of the Access Hollywood tape , I would have missed that the Trump DOJ is looking to reframe Nixon as a casualty of the Deep State. Their devious obsession with rewriting history is something.
"By November, it was clear that institutional Republicans had lost their nerve. Democrats lost the argument, and the feminist movement—my movement—lost the room. So what had changed? Not one thing but many." @ilyseh.bsky.social on the Access Hollywood tape:
It's (almost) the 10 year anniversary of the Access Hollywood tape. I wrote about what we should have known and are still learning for @thebulwark.com. TL; DR: It's hard to have a functioning democracy when the people have withdrawn their own consent. www.thebulwark.com/p/access-hol...
10th anniversary of the Access Hollywood tape and I think we had the wrong diagnosis then of the cancer metastasizing in our country and we're still not caught up to speed. Wrote about it for @thebulwark.com www.thebulwark.com/p/access-hol...
True, I stopped short of offering too many solutions because the piece was already long and I think we had (and have) the wrong diagnosis of the problem. That being said, I agree with you on healthcare and the Republicans will own if if they can.
"The first week of October 2016 was still the Before Times."

Not at all the point of this post, but I do feel like it's criminal that I was today years old before knowing that there's a BlueSky account with the handle Why Sharks Matter.
Few organizations in the world could take the kind of fire Media Matters has since 2023 and not only survive, but win legal victories that benefit all. For another org to use misinformation to raise funds for themselves is questionable at best and certainly not how we win against fascists.
