This is one glimpse into the expertise she’ll bring to Climate Week at Columbia Engineering. Catch her today at the LCSE symposium, where she’ll lead discussions alongside leaders from industry, research, and government on rebuilding secure & sustainable mineral supply chains.
Greeshma Gadikota, the Lenfest Earth Institute Professor of Climate Change and professor of earth and environmental engineering, is using engineering methods to recover more of what's actually in the rock, such as the copper-rich leachate she's extracting from the sample of low-grade ore.
Copper rarely comes out of the ground on its own. Ores are usually bundled with other elements, and traditional mining leaves most of that behind as waste.
Mining is essential but doesn’t have to be wasteful. Lenfest Center for Sustainable Energy director Greeshma Gadikota of @columbiaseas.bsky.social & @climate.columbia.edu is developing sustainable approaches for acquiring & refining raw inputs that become hardware & energy: https://bit.ly/4xFOCwe
