A great read from @klaszus.bsky.social as always. Thank you for writing this!

I continue to be dumbfounded by anyone that argues against safer streets after reading the stats in this piece. We know what works, & it's not letting drivers behave recklessly & drive fast.

New Sprawlcast episode out this morning, about pedestrian safety—or lack thereof—in Calgary. (Headline idea from @chealion.ca, who made a bot that tracks and tweets pedestrian incidents in the city)

Casually throwing away a decade of work, probably 10s of millions of dollars worth, and making Edmonton start from scratch. Stopping a building boom in its tracks too. Red tape reduction my ass.

Edmonton will be required to adopt rules for high-density infill development that revert to the parameters in place before its 2024 zoning changes for housing types, density and height, and to restore minimum on-site parking requirements in place before 2020. Edmonton will have three months from Oct. 8 to amend its bylaw.

How am I supposed to fix that the restaurant’s ordering vendor won’t accept my address that corresponds to any of my credit cards and if using their 25 years out of date correct autocorrect it gets denied?

And a soupçon of white supremacy. I'm no Janet Brown, but I'm a Quebecker by birth & an Albertan by career choice, and the characteristic that binds the two separatist movements is indeed, from lived experience, the racism & white supremacy embedded often disguised as a longing for halcyon days.

One more time for the cheap seats in the back!

Screenshot of article which reads: Democrats
and Republicans in the 1950s could agree on many things, as long as
they also agreed that Jim Crow oppression in the American South was
acceptable and that women belonged in the home. Once they started
disagreeing about these things, and especially once they were no longer
the only people allowed in the room, U.S. politics became significantly
more contentious. Not everyone wanted to peacefully extend power to
previously marginalized groups.

"The current level of political animosity is exactly what one would expect to see if an extremist faction attempted to rescind the hard-earned rights of the vast majority of the country’s citizens." There are not enough exclamation points to convey how I felt reading this paragraph

Screenshot of article which reads: From this perspective, the “both sides” frame falls apart. The prob-
lem is not that the parties are divided. The problem is the existential
threat that a reempowered ethnonationalist strain poses to pluralistic
U.S. democracy writ large. The current level of political animosity is
exactly what one would expect to see if an extremist faction attempted
to rescind the hard-earned rights of the vast majority of the country’s
citizens. The only way to re-oppress most of a country is to use anti-
democratic and authoritarian tactics. And the only way to oppose those
tactics is to push back as a population and clearly reject them. This is
the argument happening in the United States, and its pathology is not
anger—it is the movement to undermine a generation of rights.

This story, about the links between the top Alberta independence social media account and a well known separatist leader that I did with @jeffyates.bsky.social, has been pretty well read today. There have also been some common questions, so I'm going to add my 2 cents! www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...
