Important piece by @sprawlcalgary.bsky.social on the state of pedestrian mobility in Calgary and responsiveness. A deep-dive article is linked below; there's also a complementary Sprawlcast on this topic, released today. Consume, consider both.

New Sprawlcast episode out this morning, about pedestrian safety—or lack thereof—in Calgary. (Headline idea from @chealion.ca, who made a bot that tracks and tweets pedestrian incidents in the city)
What the heck, you're across the mountains now?! I missed that. Jealous.
tired of Alberta, tbh
Will be on CJSW 90.9 FM tomorrow morning chatting with @peterloliver.bsky.social about this story. At 9:15ish. Tune in! 📻
Well said. Blaming the province is politically convenient, but municipal dithering in both cities is a huge problem.
Thanks for reading!
A great read from @klaszus.bsky.social as always. Thank you for writing this!
I continue to be dumbfounded by anyone that argues against safer streets after reading the stats in this piece. We know what works, & it's not letting drivers behave recklessly & drive fast.
Don't get me started. I'm sick of getting the runaround from the city's comms department on stuff like this. This whole issue is a classic case of "strategic amnesia" if you ask me.
Just found out from this article that two streets in our neighborhood (Northmount Dr NW and Bulyea Drive NW) will have their speed limits reduced to 40 Kph. 🎉🎉🎉 About time.
Glad to hear the info was useful! I learned doing my research that a spot by my house (10th St NE, going from Renfrew into Bridgeland) is also being lowered.
So you are the culprit! Too funny. Been working on this piece for weeks and when I saw that sticker I was like—I definitely need to get a photo for my story!
100%! Maybe it's time to rename Vision Zero to Vision Fifteen or Vision Thirty-Eight or whatever it might be
Yeah that's a big difference for sure! They'll even stop for cyclists sometimes (which annoys me when I'm cycling—keep driving!). Whenever I'm in Vancouver or Toronto I have to remind myself that traffic won't stop for me at a crosswalk
On a side note, I realized partway through doing this story that it should have been a Sprawlcast. But I was too late in that realization. Hence—readable version only on this one. But another Sprawlcast coming soonish!
Calgary had a record year for pedestrian deaths in 2025. New in The Sprawl, I dig into how our streets got so dangerous after city hall's Vision Zero efforts (or lack thereof).
Patios are the new dog parks.
Good morning.
He is remarkable indeed. And full of surprises!
