It’s been a busy week here at Addgene! Check out some of the latest research with fresh plasmids just released online. Thread 🧵👇 (1/8)

2024 #Nobel winner David Baker’s lab knows a thing or two about characterizing designer proteins at scale. Their new plasmid kit enables a demultiplexing protocol to generate over 300,000 barcoded plasmids in a cheaper and simpler workflow.

Check it out:

Quality is built into our workflow. Process validated for endotoxin <1.0 EU/µg and whole-plasmid sequence verification on every order — full documentation included with every shipment. No second-guessing your prep.

Talk about a bright idea! 💡 Congrats to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel on the #NobelPrize in Physiology or Medicine for foundational discoveries in optogenetics. All three openly share their remarkable tools through Addgene.

To learn more about Henrietta’s life and her cells, we suggest The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot as an excellent resource. Johns Hopkins, the hospital where Henrietta sought cancer care, also maintains an informative website. https://twp.ai/4hwTKs (7/8)

HeLa remains one of the most widely used cell lines in biomedical research. On the anniversary of Henrietta’s passing, we honor her memory and those who have worked to make her legacy known. (6/8)

@addgene.bsky.socialOct 4, 2026, 1:00 PM

Today, Lacks family members sit on a board governing access to the HeLa genome, and they have settled lawsuits with two companies that profited from HeLa. The Henrietta Lacks Foundation provides grants to people who were involved in research “without their knowledge, consent, or benefit.” (5/8)

@addgene.bsky.socialOct 4, 2026, 1:00 PM

These breaches of trust shaped the history of bioethics. Both the origin and the evolving uses of HeLa contributed to changing public attitudes around medical privacy and informed consent, and modern requirements ensure that patients understand the procedures they agree to. (4/8)

@addgene.bsky.socialOct 4, 2026, 1:00 PM

For more than 20 years, as HeLa transformed research, Henrietta’s family knew nothing about the cells and often struggled to afford medical care. In 2013, the HeLa genome was published without the consent of the children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who share those genes. (3/8)

@addgene.bsky.socialOct 4, 2026, 1:00 PM

HeLa cells, as they came to be known, were the first “immortal” human cell line. They were used to test Jonas Salk’s polio vaccine, launched into space on early satellites, and were the first human cells to be cloned, among thousands of other applications. (2/8)

On this day 75 years ago, Henrietta Lacks died of aggressive cervical cancer. She left behind a husband, five children, and a sample of her cancer cells — taken without her knowledge — that had already begun to replicate independently in a lab. Thread 🧵👇 (1/8)

We’re attending #NERLSCD 2026 at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, October 14–16!

If you see Hannah Dotson at the meeting, say hello and chat about plasmids, pooled libraries, Transfection-Ready DNA, and how core facilities use shared research tools.
