Excited to share our work on bacterial immune signaling! Our preprint reveals how RNA-guided Cas13 cleaves host tRNAs to generate small-molecule messengers that activate 2TMβ, linking RNA recognition to membrane damage and phage defense. 1/11

I also recommend the very interesting "Behind the paper" by Dorentina @humollidorentina.bsky.social which is linked in her post and here: t.co/yh6Y2iJlg5

Cover image alert 🎨🚨👇🏼 - check out the amazing drawing of Sophia Zimmermann from our group in Nature Microbiology @natmicrobiol.nature.com !

Fun fact: Sophia initially drew it as a present to Dorentina @humollidorentina.bsky.social when we celebrated her recent paper on TnSeq with phages 🥂😊.

@jihoon-han.bsky.social's new detectron technology -- out now in Nature Biotechnology. Toehold RNA sensing controls a retron-derived DNA barcode generator. Check it out!

If you ever wondered why visible light is those particular wavelengths, it's because life evolved to see in the narrow range where water is transparent

Very happy to share that HIDEN-SEQ is now out in @natmicrobiol.nature.com!
Using this technique, we recapitulated decades of established phage genetics and uncovered new gene functions, including previously unknown anti-defense factors against several defense systems.

Our TnSeq in E. coli phages uses a Himar1 transposon. For a similar tool targeting P. aeruginosa phages, check this work of @jbdsf.bsky.social: tinyurl.com/yv5x97j7. A complementary method using Tn5 in Serratia is described by @peterfineran.bsky.social and out today as well: tinyurl.com/mueaa7nm 4/4

First author Dorentina Humolli @humollidorentina.bsky.social has pushed this through with her ingenuity and hard work. Read more about this in her thread about the paper 👇. Many thanks also to all coauthors for their contributions. 3/4

The final version of our manuscript on TnSeq in bacteriophages (“HIDEN-SEQ”) is out today – if you have an interesting phage phenotype and want to know the underlying genetic basis, this one is for you! 1/4

Beautiful mural at Imperial College's White City Campus commemorating the discovery of mauveine (a synthetic dye) - my new life goal is to convince a university that they need a giant bacteriophage on one of their buildings 🧬🎨

Great honor to present our work in a keynote lecture at the Belgian Society for Viruses of Microbes @bsvom.bsky.social in Louvain-la-Neuve! This was a fantastic meeting celebrating the power of collaborations in phage research from the fundamentals to applications in clinics or crop protection. 🧬🍺🇧🇪
