Love seeing one of my favorite previous lairs (tower room, @nuffieldlibrary.bsky.social) reposting my book đ this triggers immediate @nuffieldcollege.bsky.social @ox.ac.uk nostalgia & makes me think a visit is sorely needed. Many foundational ideas of this book developed during my DPhil at Nuffield.
Visiting Switzerland twice (!) next month to speak in Zurich, Bern, Basel and other places! Pleased to see so much interest in #DemocratizingAI & excited to interact with the exciting Swiss research & policy community. Looking fwd to participating in this panel by @algorithmwatchch.bsky.social â¨
super normal behavior âđť by super normal company âđť
(2) Even if benefits *were* dispersed in a more widespread, egalitarian way, that wouldnât make the severe labor exploitation in and through this sector okânor would it equate to meaningful democratic control over AIâs future direction.
Key takeaways from those talks so far: (1) Silicon Valley oligarchs keep promising everyone that in the AI golden age everyone will benefit from accelerates deployment bc weâll all work less & on more interesting things. That hasnât happened. Benefits continue to be highly concentrated.
Had a great time delivering a talk on AI oligarchs & labor exploitation at MO Museum of Contemporary Art and a keynote about #DemocratizingAI at Palace of the Grand Dukes/National Museum in Vilnius! Next stop: Estonian Academy of Arts in Tallinn #booktour #philosophyofAI @manchesterup.bsky.social
Over the next few months Iâll be sharing insights from my book #DemocratizingAI with audiences all over the world! Coming up in Oct: 3 talks in the artsy, tech-savvy Baltics, 3 talks in Germany, 2 talks in the US & India. Releasing Nov/Dec dates soon, watch this space đ¤ @manchesterup.bsky.social
treat your body like a data center. consume as much water, art and literature as possible. upset local municipalities with your existence.
UPDATE: After hearing from friends in the DMs, weâre gonna make this a cohosted gathering. So after my censored remarks, weâll hear about people actually doing the work that so many of our institutions pretend to. If your org wants to cohost, DM me.
So let me know if you want to come to a virtual talk next wk on âReimagining Leadership.â Time tbd. The focus is on cultivating critical, creative, and caring capacities in medicine, but I think it applies beyond that. Iâm pretty sure we can do this without any leaders.
So they asked me to delete half the deck: â˘screenshots of scientific articles â˘George Floydâs autopsy report â˘med students holding signs for âWhite Coats for Black Livesâ â˘a cartoonish image of Musk lest we offend the trillionaire â˘Butler quote: âchoose your leaders with wisdom & forethoughtâ ETC
Iâm in DC scheduled to give this talk today. But the organizers flagged slides in my deck that mention racism, structural gaslighting, New Jim Code and other themes that are off limits in the Land of the Free.
I am, however, a huge fan of @dsallentess.bsky.socialâs incredibly important work on Democracy Renovator! Everyone should check it outâI recommend their articles all the time to colleagues & students đ¤
Unsurprisingly, Iâm not a fan of completely unenforceable and voluntary self-regulation by Big Tech oligarchs. I also think the proliferation of antidemocratic ideology & unchecked Big Tech market concentration & money in politics remain key threats that realistic policy responses must stay clear on
So pleased to be featured on one of my absolute favorite Substacks, @democracyrenovator.bsky.social led by Danielle Allen, with an interview about my book #DemocratizingAI written by Zachey Kliger (whose Tech & Democracy roundups are a clear must-read)! www.democracyrenovator.com/p/a-morally-...
đŻ another key reason why #AIexceptionalism is so misguided and dangerous. Letâs apply the lessons we can learn from *other* domains of policy-makingâabout risk, about political accountability, etcâhere, without engaging in magical thinking. For more on this, check out my đ #democratizingAI #AIpolicy
Ah, are recent public statements of tech oligarchs & their hearts of gold perhaps driven by goals that are⌠not linked solely to selflessly, singlehandedly saving humanity? At least no media outlets fell for it by slipping into a full blown 2 week panic/fawn response to very earnest tech bros, phew
Wow, reading these words about #DemocratizingAI from @rcalo.bsky.social (@uwlaw.bsky.social) means the world to meâI keep learning a huge amount from the law&tech community & esp Ryanâs absolutely pathbreaking work. I am so inspired by #techlaw scholarship &want #philosophers to be in dialogue w/it!
I say more about why THESE are the central problems that #AIpolicy #AIgovernance & citizens more broadly need to focus on (not just doomer #xrisk scenarios) in my book Democratizing AI! bookshop.org/p/books/demo... Like & follow & comment for a free open access digital copy đ¤
