A blast of colour from Bolivia for #SkipperSaturday

There's about 3,500 members of the Hesperiidae family of butterflies. Here's a few of them, photographed today by one of our guides that we felt were worth sharing.

The new (slightly revised) Red List of European Moths has been published by the EU. A summary and links to downloads can be found on our website. Moths play a vital role in ecosystems and there is also an important new document on how to plan for their conservation

Bringing some mesmerizing nature to your Friday feed! 🇧🇹💧

Our local guide in Bhutan captured this beautiful video of a dragonfly laying her eggs in a mountain stream.

🦋 Why do butterflies gather on damp ground? Mud-puddling allows butterflies to take up moisture, salts & other nutrients. Sometimes hundreds gather together - spectacular behaviour we’re fortunate to encounter on many of our butterfly holidays.

Darter Delight #ShareMondays2026

A vibrantly coloured, immature #red-veined #darter #dragonfly seen in the #ruins of the #AncientAgora of #KosTown last week 🇬🇷💙 #nature #wildlife @britishdragonflies.bsky.social @greenwingstours.bsky.social @dailykos.com #Greece #KosIsland #FujifilmUK #odonata

During a trip to the Greek island of Kos last week, I went looking for some of my favourite butterflies and dragonflies in the grounds of the Ancient Agora, in the heart of Kos Town. I was delighted to find this immature male red-veined darter.

As it matures, its vivid red colouration gradually replaces the yellows with which it first emerges — colouring that is retained by the female — creating a subject even more striking than it will eventually become. It’s practically a rainbow with wings!

Red-veined darters have traditionally been a species of southern Europe, but as the climate warms they are being recorded more frequently in Central Europe. In the UK, they remain mainly summer migrants in the far south, but I suspect they will eventually establish stable breeding populations as our climate continues to change. For me, though, I’ll always associate them with the Greek Islands in early autumn.

Here’s a description of the image for those with visual impairments:

An immature red-veined darter dragonfly (Sympetrum fonscolombii) is perched on a slender green stem, shown in crisp horizontal profile and facing left. The plant stem acts as a leading line, extending from the bottom-left corner and angling upwards to cradle the insect. Its large compound eyes are strikingly two-toned: brownish-red above and bright powder-blue below. The thorax is pale golden-green and ochre, rather than the deep red of a mature male, while the abdomen is predominantly golden-yellow and light orange, with red just beginning to develop along its upper ridge. Four clear, intricately veined wings extend from the body, with golden-yellow bases and pale, black-edged pterostigmata. Its dark legs grip the stem firmly. The background is completely blurred, a soft, minimalist wash of muted olive green and earthy beige.

🦋 There’s more to a butterfly than the butterfly! On Greenwings holidays, our guides look beyond the adults to find caterpillars, food plants and other life stages, revealing more about their ecology to our guests. Apollo (Parnassius apollo), Italian Alps 🇮🇹

The False Apollo (Archon apollinus). One of Europe’s rarest & most beautiful butterflies.

Photos show eggs (laid on Aristolochia), the striking caterpillar, and both sexes of the adult (female top, male bottom).

How about one of the worlds most iconic & beautiful butterflies for a #Leptember post today? The Rajah Brooke's Birdwing (Trogonoptera brookiana). This video was shot in Malaysia & we can't wait to go back there next year for more!

Another foodplant first! This time, of Holly Blue using Kidney Vetch as a larval foodplant, with an egg followed through to final instar larva by Maggie Zebroski. This is, I believe, the first record of the use of Kidney Vetch, not just for the UK, but for the whole of Europe! Well done Maggie!

Here's a #leptember shot taken today in Bhutan, by our good friend Sonam. The stunning Bhutan Glory (Bhutanitis lidderdalii). Sonam actively monitors & researches these and lots of other wildlife & we're working on a second itinerary to complement our regular butterfly holiday - watch this space!
