@KanaMauna @dantheclamman They also have color constancy, so they can identify the same colors under varying lighting conditions. Gd fish are almost as cool as cuttlefish!

@dantheclamman Oh, they are not dumb. Use to have a large tank with several fancy goldfish. They would get very excited when I came in the room and swim to the top looking for food. However, they’d ignore my kids and were lukewarm towards my wife and mother-in-law.

New solar-powered clam just dropped, part of a small club that partner with algae in their bodies for food! Geloina expansa lives in mangroves in South Asia and farms algae called zooxanthellae in its gills, the same type that corals partner with in a process […]

Avoid anti-goldfish language! Be aware that when you accuse someone of having the memory of a goldfish, you are actually saying they have a prodigious ability to remember places and the overall spatial layout of their territory, allowing them to expertly navigate […]

From the paper: Interestingly, goldfish are able to use not only the information provided by con- spicuous objects in the environment, but also the geometrical attributes of the surroundings for spatial navigation, and conjoin geometric and nongeometric information to reorient themselves.35-38 In summary, these findings re- veal that teleost fish can reach the goal location by learning its position relative to the land- marks and other features of the environment, by using any available spatial information and by encoding the reciprocal metric and geomet- ric relationships relative to the goal, thus indi- cating distinctly they have the capacity to use relational memory mechanisms (Fig. 1).

My cat keeps a pretty accurate solar clock of important daily events (food time, walk time, etc), and we've reached the time of year when his estimates are rapidly changing in the day with the sun. I'm pretty sure I could cross plot it with solar declination and it would be closely related. He's […]

I wrote a blog (and crunched some numbers) about the spread of golden mussels across California over the last couple years! These mussels have me shook.

In ancient Egypt, a shimmering golden fabric known as ‘sea silk’ was made from the anchor threads of Pinna nobilis clams: very fine but exceptionally tough and durable. A similar textile has been made with fibres from Atrina pectinata clams, cultivated for food in Korean coastal waters. The […]

Because of the anthocyanins

Many bivalves live colonially. But how do the floating plankton larvae know where to settle? Researchers have determined that when baby mussels smell the pheromones of adult mussels, they are up to 85 times more likely to settle down and attach themselves! #clamFacts […]

Blue and green are rare colors for shells (and rare across life in general). A new study finds blue shells may be due to carotenoid pigments, while green is due to structural coloration! https:// www.nature.com/articles/s41598-026-61670-9 #clamFacts

Various blue and green shells featured in the study, ranging from mussels to oysters and weirder shaped guys!Cross sections showing the colored shells, with some green color being contained in distinct layers, while other shells have it just on the surface, or distributed more evenly

Kudos to the US Coast Guard for keeping folks safe (and giving hourly deadpan radio updates) about whoever made the very poor decision to tow a houseboat during yesterday's rough conditions in San Pablo Bay. Hope everything turned out ok, last we heard the houseboat "went adrift".

Yesterday I noticed a swarm of tiny water striders next to a boat dock on the Sacramento River. They move so fast that they are mostly a blur! I had seen them before but never had stopped to ID them. I learned from iNaturalist they are Rhagovelia distincta. I […]

The global bivalve trade is growing almost 10% a year. Challenges include harmful algae, pollution, invasive predators, and diseases, but overall, bivalves are a highly sustainable source of protein! Check the Monterey Seafood Guide to be sure, but many bivalve fisheries worldwide are stable and […]

@theodoraward I agree overall, though a lot of models we use to explain our data have probabilistic errors, which is part of their appeal, such as bootstrapping where we add probabilistic variability on purpose. but I think the core issue I have is that a language model can't really understand […]

@KanaMauna yeah, every institution has mistakes and mismanagement. LA Zoo has had a bad couple decades, for example, and is now in a shitshow of a fight with the city. Philadelphia is about to lose its storied natural history museum. But SF seems unique in how its natural science institutions […]
