@futurebird for a while I lived in a house that was so poorly constructed nearly every door could be opened by the cats; they could reach under the door and tug it open, and the latches would not hold against the strength of a cat!

@futurebird I have been told Ukraine recently removed data from Yandex. Maybe just send them money and hope for the best.

There are all these services that claim they can remove you from mailing lists, protect you from data breeches, or alert you when your data are on the dark web. I'm really skeptical of all of them. * Are there any standards or regulations about running such services? * Are there any […]

@futurebird
all through school I was surrounded by teachers who denigrated memorization. Even those who taught little else. But the ones who hated it most were creative writing teachers. They said memorization made creativity impossible.

Eventually (unfortunately I did not arrive at this view […]

Near our house is a two-level crossing of major bike paths, where you can't make a turn from one to the other. You have to lift or lower your bike on a rope.

After my repeated suggestions to the municipal road board, they're finally building a ramp!

[How to Memorize Anything]

@futurebird
2/2
2 difficulty: it's buried somewhere in the stack of flashcards
3 difficulty: I left the flashcards at home and I've gone to the park, or to the bus stop, and I'm writing it down from memory. I'll have to wait 'till I get home to compare the two.

I don't know the best way, but I would gradually increase the difficulting of fetching the material record of what I was trying to memorize, like so:

0 difficulty: direct copying, with the referenced material still visible, but I need to turn my head […]

[How to Memorize Anything] I wrote this for my students but I thought I'd share it here too. To memorize vocabulary words, formulas or definitions you should practice *recalling* that information. Just reading or copying the thing you want to memorize over and over may not help you remember it […]

#Arachtober 2: checked out the garden wall late last night in the hopes of finding arachnids, found many snout mites (family Bdellidae), including this one feeding on a tiny bristle millipede (family Polyxenidae)!

I have seen very few arthropods preying on […]

[Original post on flipping.rocks]

A bright red mite with pointy mouthparts that are buried in the underside of a small many-legged arthropod covered with little bristles (more of which are scattered around it). Another angle that better shows the snout mite's elbowed pedipalps on either side of the snout, like a weevil's antennae. One can also see a thick clump of bristles.Here is what a bristle millipede looks like alive and the right way up, more like a carpet beetle larva or a caterpillar than a typical millipede. Its segments are fringed with rows of bristle-like hairs, and it has two bundles of longer hairs coming out of the end of its butt, a little like the waxy tail of a planthopper.

#Arachtober 1: the lights on this pedestrian bridge create giant spider shadows! The casters are the appropriately named bridge spiders, _Larinioides sclopetarius_.

#DailySpiderPic #spiders #orbweavers #Araneae #Araneidae

A pedestrian bridge by night, with downward-facing lights set underneath the wooden railings. A spider has built its web directly beneath one, creating a giant spider shadow on the walkway.A further-out view showing the bridge curving away, with dozens of similar lights. An orbweaver spider at the centre of its symmetrical, wheel-like web. It has a darker leaf-like marking (the folium) on the top side of its abdomen which looks a little like a fleur-de-lys.

@futurebird I would like to re-read Andy Knoll's _Life on a Young Planet_ , and think about how much has been learned since he wrote the book about a quarter century ago. It wasn't even called the Ediacaran then, and there was still an awful lot of uncertainity about the relative timing of the […]

for me, a knob is ideal for adjusting almost any parameter that falls within range of values, unless I must operate it with my middle finger alone, but I can't operate a touch screen slider with my middle finger either.
