The report also highlights the strength and expertise already within communities – but VCSE/FBOs can't tackle structural inequality alone. With better data, sustained investment, and, crucially, the involvement of minority ethnic women, we can design and deliver better interventions for women. 4/6

@healthequitynorth.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 5:35 PM

The report reveals that: • 18.1% of minority ethnic women in the North have a long-lasting limiting illness, compared with 14.2% in the South. • Older minority ethnic people are 3.81 times more likely to experience loneliness than their White British peers. 3/6

@healthequitynorth.bsky.socialOct 7, 2026, 5:35 PM

The findings reveal how ethnicity, gender and place intersect to exacerbate a lifetime of inequalities for minority ethnic women, stretching from childhood and maternity care, through to mental health, employment, violence, criminal justice and later life. 2/6

Minority ethnic women across the North of England are falling through gaps in national data. The result? Stark, hidden inequalities.

Today in Sheffield, we launched our new #WomanoftheNorth report: ‘Woman of the North: Closing the health gap for minority ethnic women’.

Bringing together voices from across policy, research, and the charity sector made clear that poverty, and approaches to tackling it, are going to look different in every place. But by coming together, we can start to make a difference. 2/3

But these inequalities are not inevitable – all women deserve equal access to the healthcare and support they need, and to live in a society that can understand cultural differences and design services around everybody’s needs.

@healthequitynorth.bsky.socialSep 29, 2026, 10:39 AM

The panel demonstrated discussed how minority ethnic women are often overlooked and left behind when accessing healthcare, and how evidence shows these inequalities persist across the life course – through childhood, pregnancy, employment, opportunities and in older ages.

@healthequitynorth.bsky.socialSep 29, 2026, 10:39 AM

Inequalities in health among minority ethnic women need to be urgently addressed, and we are leading the way in research.

It was great to once again showcase our work at #LabourPartyConference2026 putting, a spotlight on a widely overlooked area of health.
