As we write in our recent report “Fractured Reality”:

Collectively shaping digitalization requires public infrastructure, citizen science, discussions on normative principles, interoperability, technical know-how, governance, as well, most importantly, an active role for the social sciences and humanities in collaboration with the technical sciences.

It is becoming increasingly apparent that societies must create conditions to stop being merely spectators (and exploitation objects) of digitalisation. Instead of allowing it to further concentrate wealth, influence, and surveillance, open corporate silos and simultaneously build public capacity.

SocArXiv now has a limit of two papers per week. If authors submit more than that we assume they are LLM-generated and reject them all. Normal humans who need to upload a batch of papers, which sometimes happens, must make arrangements. Also today, ArXiv set a two papers per month limit.

Interested in, or already using (for academic or industry research) digital twins? In this analysis, digital twins' responses "correlate weakly [0.20] with human responses". Not nothing but.. not great if goal is reliable knowledge or basis for consequential decisions www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

The modern research ecosystem of online tools and communities is controlled by for-profit companies. But we think that researchers should be the priority - not the product. So, we're announcing Aster ID: not-for-profit Atmosphere account hosting for researchers.

quallmer 0.5.0 is now on CRAN: the R package Seraphine Maerz and I are building for LLM-assisted qualitative coding.

This release adds robustness, more models, and multimodal input. 🧵

📽️What do MPs communicate beyond their words? Our DFG project (w/ @chrisguarnold.bsky.social + @pluggedchris.bsky.social) studies not just what MPs say, but how and why they say it: voice, gestures, eye contact. We draw on 30,000+ hours of video from the German Bundestag and all 16 state parliaments.

I've been messing around with the new @mysky.social feed since it was announced, and it seems pretty good. Out of the box it feels comparable to the For You feed (the current best of breed), except MySky is highly user-configurable, including a neat debug view to see why you are seeing certain posts
