I just finished The Strangers by @naomialderman.bsky.social and it’s wonderful. A novel for this present moment. I want to recommend it to everyone I know. I borrowed a library copy but I think I’ll buy it to read it again. The kind of speculative fiction/scifi that shows us what it is to be human.

For all new PhD students starting their journey today, I just wanted to share this piece about foregrounding both the joy and value of what you are doing. Good luck to you all - you are doing hope’s work www.timeshighereducation.com/opinion/too-...

Had a great time at the Arts Lab Showcase representing the Glasgow Lab for Intersex, Non-binary and Trans Studies. Was great fun working the stall with @echomikeromeo.bsky.social & @notrightruth.bsky.social ✨

Got a little pink ballot in the post from @ucuglasgow.bsky.social Did a little pink vote. Going to take it to a little red post box. Every academic job I’ve had has been in the shadow of redundancy & uncertainty. Welcome ā€œpermanentā€ colleagues. We’re all precarious now. Vote yes for something better

A pink ucu envelope. Partially inside is a ucu ballot statement on the dispute. The top line reads ā€œVote yes to defend jobs and promotions at Glasgowā€

Who amongst us hasn’t had a little nibble on the young people’s productive lives? Nom nom nom. All the humanities and social science students I know have incredible skills. They question the world around them from injustices to mis/disinformation. And most of them work to cover their living costs.

Harvey Humphrey et al.’s article, 'As Is and Co-creating Theatre from Research to Stage', looks at the staging of an 'ethnodrama' based on research with trans, intersex and LGBTI activists

Sometimes I share it in methods teaching. I think it’s really useful for thinking about how different approaches and frameworks will give different projects and results. (Also I can pretend I’m cool).

It’s National Poetry Day. Please enjoy this poem I wrote called ā€˜The Research Interview’ [text in alt text on image]. It was published in 2022 in the feminist journal, Cultivate, and you can see it with all it’s publication pals here: www.cultivatefeministjournal.com/_files/ugd/7...

Research Interview

We face each other at this surface made of wood
this space familiar to you- the walls hold history
new campaign posters you explain, I nod; understood
you don't define the terms, do I see you reading me?

so why did you decide to participate l ask
emphasising decide- to be involved is a choice
reminding us both that this chat is a research task
one in which I hope I will do justice to your voice

Hours later I'll check you still consent to the study
but now we sit together in a moment in time
with your words you bring to life decades of history
interruptions of questions and laughter- yours and mine

as you speak the stories grow around us in the air
made solidly of words they flourish in this present
older terms once forgotten reappear as you share
you hesitate clocking me have you caused me offense

no tell me more about this language, your terms, your words
the air grows thick with history, older terms emerge
terms from others: embraced, refused; reclaimed names; codewords
then language a battleground as communities merge

Your memory nurtures the stories grown in this space
speaking back but looking up to the walls' current work
seeds of which sown in worn documents in the bookcase
now though newer generations take the reigns; teamwork

fresh voices with new terms, some offshoots from older texts
some brand new homegrown in grassroots' imagined future
some are old-made-new terms reimagined with new depths
you teach me delighted to be an introducer

I gather your words old and new in my hands gently
keeping safe, holding them in Dictaphone-arms with care
recorded while they grew not wishing to miss any
placed with the others; stories from those who chose to share

you smile now as our conversation draws to a close
can I keep that sense of you as words are analysed
will I keep in touch let you know how the research goes
careful not to lose these gently gathered living-person-words when research-words are revised and revised

One great thing about online methods lectures is colleagues give guest lectures who otherwise might not be able to join us. This means I get to feel like a student watching brilliant colleagues share their methodological & storytelling insights. We should watch our colleagues teach more! It’s a joy.

First week of in person teaching. @academicdiary.bsky.social gave our methods students an excellent guest lecture on research questions. & I’ve just had 2 groups of seminars alive with students’ engaged reflections on fieldwork fables videos (referenced in this: journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...)

Very niche question for other folks in Scotland who are still entitled to Covid vaccines. Are you getting a really reduced list of locations when you login? Folks entitled to only flu jabs seem to have more options. Is this a Covid jab thing? A health board thing? A Harvey can’t work websites thing?

@harveyhumphrey.bsky.socialSep 24, 2026, 7:38 AM

This makes me really sad. The robots are apparently ā€˜citing’ my work & they’ve found an article that really carefully plays with temporality and flow of the text using footnotes. It’s meant to be a really fun read. I feel like it being hoovered up by the chatbots means it loses some of that magic.

Brilliant talk on ā€œdoomscrolling in a vortex of anti trans contentā€ on trans youth social media use from @drews.bsky.social as part of the Create/Connect Trans & Queer Youth Creativity Community & Resilience Symposium. Similar ideas coming out of our (@paulreilly.bsky.social & Judas) work in Ireland

It was not yet in use! I actually don’t know if they were using it here. They have since disappeared. Maybe they are ghost bustin’!

@harveyhumphrey.bsky.socialSep 22, 2026, 2:12 PM

I just said ā€œI love when you see a ghost buster out in the wildā€ alone in my own home to myself. I think I was a bit loud. I am now concerned the man with the leaf blower outside heard me. Please keep me safe from the ghosts and/or leaves. I promise never to mock your profession again.

Why not Swindon though? Justice for Swindon!

So I have a ā€œphone voiceā€ which I think is polite. I don’t use it very often. Phone calls are a lot. I just had to phone the repairs company for our flat (joys of renting). And my phone voice has changed! It is both lower and possibly slightly less English. Welcome to dull things I find fascinating.

For the first time in my career I worry about my ability to reach new clients. So many in the engagement/Researcher Development space are flooding socials with well performing ChatGPT content that I feel I’m getting lost in the tide.

Piece of paper. ā€œCan’t draw + don’t want to use AIā€
