I was recently informed by a musician friend that the BBC have, in fact, not only banned slogans on their entertainment shows, but also flags, *and* have also recently banned people from wearing colours that might be reasonable "construed" as representing a flag. So no you probably can't wear this.

Bethany wore a “Protect The Dolls” t-shirt during rehearsals. The BBC posted it on their socials then quietly deleted and reposted it without showing her from the front. On TV last night they actually blurred the message #Strictly

This is clearly a good result for Labour, but it also doesn't strike me as a terrible result for the Greens. Vote share held up from the local elections in a constituency that was never really a target for them

It's been three years since I first heard Wallsocket - as of this morning I'm still discovering new things about the brilliant music on this album, and developing new theories about the storyline. An absolute masterpiece. Concept album of the decade.

So yes, it enables you to code faster, but then all the extra finding and fixing mistakes cancels out that advantage.

This is what rigging in a democracy-turned-fascist ethnostate looks like. Even as Opposition parties & other groups protest the regime's vote rigging and mass disenfranchisement of Indians in Delhi, the BJP happily turned a by-poll in my state into a one-party election in their favour.

The UG students where I work have no 'choice' over the modules they study, Jo. Back in my day I had a wealth of options. These students – who are lucky to study there at all since we don't recruit in history anymore – do the modules they're given.

Wrote something a while back about imperialism and claims to meritocracy. The same thing happens over and over because it's always about power.

When politics is colonised by the attention economy, then public discourse becomes a constantly shifting sea of outrage. Today, this; tomorrow, that. It is a state of affairs entirely inimical to emancipatory politics, which is predicated on bolstering people’s capacity to take decisions about their collective fate and participate in sustained efforts to change the status quo. Trump keeps us busy with headlines and late-night posts, while the real work of destruction goes on in the background.

This analysis of the far right in Brasil is spot on - and to me it also describes the politics of ressentiment in the UK and the US as well. It is just that in these two countries, it is targeted at migrants.

www.equator.org/articles/bra...

Ever since Brexit and Trump, when the political weather changed so dramatically, the left has responded with two narratives: we either paint the far right as a revolt of the elites without a real popular base, or as a revolt of the left-behind, of a working-class betrayed by liberal elitism.

Neither of these narratives persuades me. Rather, I believe the contemporary far right is a cross-class phenomenon. One way to understand it is as a movement that brings together an underclass that has given up waiting on the promises of modernisation – formal work, accountable institutions, real equality before the law – and an elite who no longer even pretends those promises are on offer.

Between them lies the hardest core of true believers – not the largest group statistically, but the most passionate – which I call, borrowing a phrase from Orwell, the “lower-upper-middle class”. These are people who fall between two stools: they have a good standard of living but lack the assets or social capital of the true elite. They are not only haunted by the fear of downward social mobility, but also threatened by any minor upward mobility achieved by those below them, as during the Pink Tide in Latin America, when the poor became less poor – began attending university, travelling internationally and so forth. This generated a feeling of resentment that was easily instrumentalised.

Sometimes my wife and I like to send each other text messages as though they’re democratic fundraising messages, and I believe she has produced the jewel of the form.

, it's
and I
have some personal news to share with you.
Being a mom is one of the greatest joys of my life, and I feel deeply that we should have salad tonight
This year has been challenging in many ways, and I have immense gratitude for the kindness and support of family, community, and people like you who have continued to stand by me through everything. It means the world, and I wanted you to be among the first to know that squash is in the oven and kale is in the fridge. As many of you are aware, ve been navigating one of the most challenging periods of my day while waiting for dinner.
Facing baseless federal hunger brought on by not eating since lunch, fighting for the working kids of this country, and now caring for a mean toddler and helping him grow up in a world that isn't always easy. But it has also reminded me exactly why I do this work and who I do it for.
I will never stop working to eat dinner. I will never stop fighting for what is right, even when there is also some feta in the fridge. And I will never stop being so very thankful that you are by my side in this important work and that there is tahini in the pantry for dressing
With love and gratitude,
stop to end
