Our new Litigant Portal is a tool that will support the many people who come to court without a lawyer. To guide its development, our Justice Initiatives team visited courts across the country to see firsthand the challenges these litigants face. free.law/2026/10/05/a...

Agree about the black box, and concerns about cognitive surrender are real. It’s a complex topic. Our goal is that this makes legal research better for those with existing tools and accessible to those without.

This system is designed to help with hallucinations. For example, you can use this to check if a brief has issues. Pro se litigants aren’t going anywhere. This gives them something much better than Google and even better than ChatGPT alone. Major firms are using this.

@free.lawOct 2, 2026, 3:30 PM

That’s the point. By adding our tool to ChatGPT, the AI can check for hallucinations and can grounds its research in real data.

This promo ended yesterday. We hope you got a chance to try our tool that connects CourtListener into ChatGPT. If you haven't the idea is for everybody to have access to powerful legal research for all of their needs.

The Thomson v. ROSS Intelligence opinion is now published, and it mostly does no harm. In particular, it doesnt rule on AI training in general or on the market dilution theory.

In seriousness, we used to have a $5 tier, but we bumped the low-end to $10/month a year or two ago. You can barely get a coffee for five bucks, so we hope ten is palatable, so to speak!

And here's the full decision: www.courtlistener.com/docket/70622...

@free.lawSep 29, 2026, 9:29 PM

We're awaiting the full decision pending redactions by the parties, but it looks like ROSS lost their appeal of their case against Thomson Reuters. We and many others supported ROSS as amicus and are disappointed at this outcome: storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

CourtListener is experiencing downtime today due to an aggressive crawler using many IP addresses to hit our last remaining open APIs. We're adding authentication to these APIs so they're no longer open, and should be back up momentarily. Sorry about this. The crawlers have become a scourge.

Today we completed our first end-to-end pipeline: - Scan case law book - Partition book into decision PDFs - Auto-redact headnotes etc - Review redactions - Extract using OCR ensemble - Label metadata - Convert to XML Easy-peasy.

Yesterday, as part of our scanning project, we scanned our two-millionth page of case law. Woo! free.law/2026/04/16/s...

If you haven't checked out AI connectors yet, you really should. Imagine linking your inbox, dropbox or other sources to Claude, ChatGPT, and CourtListener. It's powerful stuff. Ours is here: wiki.free.law/c/courtliste...

@free.lawSep 14, 2026, 7:53 PM

Micro-feature added to our AI legal research connector today. You and AI assistants can now check your remaining and historical CourtListener API usage. This should help the AI's to understand their limits as they complete your tasks.

A screenshot of a Claude chat. The user asks: "Tell me how much CL API usage I have left" and the AI responds in detail.
