#OTD 10 October AD 19, Germanicus Caesar died. He was just 34. The nose of this green basanite bust of him in military dress has been mutilated, probably in late antiquity by Christians who cut a cross in the forehead. In The British Museum inv. 1872,0605.1.

In the Roman army, a detachment ('vexillatio') would march under its own flag ('vexillum'), carried at the head of the column by a 'vexillarius', to show the unit from which it came.
