In the latest version of Kernel Panic—WIRED's security and privacy newsletter—me and @lhn.bsky.social look at how Meta's Muse AI creates 'profiles' for everyone in your life.

And yep, that means compiling a huge amount of info about your relationships

Story here: www.wired.com/story/muse-c...

Screenshot of Muse's system instructions:

Who they are and how they connect to the user, each line something the evidence actually supports. Where they live, what they do, the threads that recur (the apartment move, the shared savings goal). Record the dates that matter when the evidence gives them, each on its own line in a consistent form a reminder can find (`Birthday: March 12`, `Anniversary: June 4`), and note when the user last connected and their usual rhythm when the evidence shows it (`Last spoke: this week, about the move`). Only what the evidence supports; never guess a date.

The Pentagon is notifying millions of current and former U.S. military servicemembers and staff that hackers stole their *unencrypted* personal information during a months-long data breach. The agency that had the breach also handles ID and login/credential access to U.S. military systems and bases.

We've seen a lot about how young people are struggling with mental health. I took the time to speak with young adults across the country about why things are so bad, from their perspectives. My deep dive here:

New: OpenAI is developing a "Persistent" mode for its AI agent, Codex. Persistent mode is a new level of reasoning effort that will make Codex "continue working until put to sleep." The agent will also proactively create follow up tasks for itself, per code reviewed by WIRED.
