Screenshot of PDF of Research Article, Older adults do not have a higher metabolic cost than younger adults in outdoor overground walking, by Eline van der Kruk, Koen J. P. Jongbloed, Monica Orlandi, Michael F. Miller and Anne K. Silverman. The publishing information states: © 2026. Published by The Company of Biologists | Journal of Experimental Biology (2026) 229, jeb252654. doi:10.1242/jeb.252654. The first sentence of the Abstract reads: The metabolic cost of walking is widely used to evaluate human performance and the effectiveness of clinical interventions.

It's long been thought that older people use more energy when walking but when Monica Orlandi and Koen Jongbloed measured the metabolic rate (MR) of older walkers on a pavement it was the same as youngsters' MR and at slow speeds they used even less energy

Thank you Cleverson Lima for sharing your experience of fee-free #OA publishing @jexpbiol.bsky.social via our #ReadAndPublish agreement with University of Kentucky @ukresearch.bsky.social

Read Cleverson’s paper: doi.org/10.1242/jeb....

Is your institution participating too? bit.ly/3O7BxGi

We were excited to submit our paper to Journal of Experimental Biology because The Company of Biologists uses surplus processing charges to develop and implement programs that benefit our community, which is a great way to reward scientists (directly or indirectly) for their valuable volunteered time for peer-reviewing and editing. The grant that funded our work had already expired when our paper was submission-ready unfortunately, but the University of Kentucky Libraries and The Company of Biologists had a Read & Publish agreement that allowed us to publish in the journal we wanted AND make it accessible for everyone! So, I’m glad that this type of agreement exists and I hope it continues to bring in new institutions to participate.

Heywood, Ruth E. W. Berganross, Elaine A. Aquino, Temidayo D. Bambe and Kelly J. Wallace. The publishing information states: © 2026. Published by The Company of Biologists | Journal of Experimental Biology (2026) 229, jeb252766. doi:10.1242/jeb.252766. The first sentence of the Abstract reads: Territorial competition has costs such as wounds received, energy spent and elevated stress.

Confrontation is stressful, but domesticated Siamese fighting fish were bred to fight, so is sparing stressful for them? Staging standoffs between males and their reflections, Alexander Heywood & co reveal that confrontation doesn't bother these fighters

Introduced dogs can decimate native species, but could agility save Australian bandicoots? Apparently not, bandicoots are way less manoeuvrable. Their high birth rate could protect, but quolls are more nimble, which could offer protection in rocky settings

In his Conversation, Stefan Schuster tells us about archer fish, which hunt prey above the surface by squirting jets of water to knock them down and predict precisely where the morsel will land to intercept it before other fish arrive
