Today Victoria hosts little NatGeo Venture, ship #330 in the season; we’re nearing 2,500 hours of cruise ship emissions for 2026. Fun fact: cruise isn’t the $$ claimed - cruise tourists account for less than 2% of tourist spending in the region. The costs? We wrote a song youtu.be/68hkleOlXak

Portland’s Cruise Economic Impact report will only count passenger spending. It won’t count the actual cost to host cruise ships.

explains how cruise pollution & climate costs are paid by the community not the cruise lines.

In about an hour, we have cruise ship Norwegian Bliss arriving in Victoria. The onslaught of emissions is almost over… for this year.

A 2020 ICCT analysis found no 20-year climate benefit from LNG as a ship fuel, regardless of engine type.

Portland's first LNG cruise ship arrived today.
LNG cuts sulfur & soot, but methane leaks. A Cornell study of US-exported LNG found its 20-year climate impact is about 1/3 worse than coal's.
We removed a coal pile from the West End. Now we’re trading it for something worse!

Tonight Victoria hosts NCL Bliss, last of the PVSA-law required regulatory stops, accounting for over 85% of Victoria cruise arrivals in 2026-mostly late, brief pitstops to avoid fines. And drop garbage, like Bliss. Here’s what NCL estimates Bliss would generate in wastes, leave in Victoria.

Some of Victoria City Council candidates are running for CRD Board, which is who decides if cruise ship solid waste goes to Hartland Landfill. Ask your CRD candidates how they’ll vote on taking American cruise ship garbage. What you can do: www.fair-sailing.com/garbage

Tonight Victoria hosts NCL Encore, here for a regulatory stop & garbage drop: solid waste destination CRD’s Hartland Landfill. Wait, what about Zero-Waste goals? Psych! Citizens = waste bad, American cruise ships = waste good. Ask your CRD candidates about it www.fair-sailing.com/garbage

There are 12 cruise ship calls left in Victoria’s 2026 season. Almost half of them are large NCL ships who filed estimates of hazardous & non-haz liquid & solid wastes generated, with plans to drop it off on our island. Tonight HAL Eurodam & NCL Bliss arrive. Cue the garbage trucks and tankers.

Victoria September cruise recap: 56 ships. 434 hours of emissions (no shore power), 84% regulatory calls required by 1886 USA law, 84% roundtrip Seattle (let’s return cruise garbage to SEA instead of offloading it here.) Cruise tourists account for less than 2% of tourist spending in our region.

How Scrubbers Work

How Scrubbers Work

• Air vs. Water Pollution: Systems swap air emissions for ocean contamination, allowing ships to burn cheap, high-sulfur fuel while complying with International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards.

• Open-Loop Systems: Pull in large volumes of seawater, spray it through exhaust stacks, and dump the resulting toxic mix overboard.

• Closed-Loop Systems: Recycle washwater onboard and store the remaining sludge for disposal on land.

Environmental Impacts

• Toxic Cocktail: Discharge contains sulfuric acid, heavy metals, soot, oil, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

• Marine Life Damage: Even extreme dilutions harm zooplankton, stunt crustacean development, and cause severe larval deformations in sea urchins and mussels.

• Volume: Individual ships can discharge up to 1,200 cubic meters of washwater per hour, totaling billions of tonnes globally each year.

Mexico has halted international cruises in Loreto through 2030 to protect its fragile bay, reversing an earlier move that would have formally opened the Baja California Sur port to international maritime traffic.

Hey Victoria, today is the final 3-ship day of the season. We host Explorer, Wonder, and suspected whale-killer and confirmed garbage scow NCL Joy. NCL filed documents estimating the amount of liquid & solid hazardous & non-haz wastes generated on Alaska cruises, offloading it in Victoria.

Another port to limit cruise activity. This time it is the Palma de Mallorca Port, limiting cruise ships to 3 a day.

When cruise tourism threatens to destroy natural resources, overwhelm communities or risk public health, limits work to restore balance.

Today Victoria again hosts Poesia, and Anthem which is sister ship to 'Whale Killer' Ovation. Ovation hit a healthy, pregnant, endangered fin whale and carried it into port on its bow. Then passengers disembarked and went whale watching. cruisefever.net/its-crushed-...

Today Victoria hosts Summit, Emerald, and NCL Encore. Cruise ships offload an undisclosed amount of hazardous & non-haz liquid & solid waste here. Here’s an estimate that Encore filed on wastes generated in 2026 and plans to offload in Victoria during its 25 calls. Spoiler Alert: it’s a lot.

Today Victoria’s cruise pollution is courtesy of Summit all day and Voyager tonight. Here’s Voyager on a previous visit. Fun Fact: cruise passengers account for less than 2% of tourist spending in the region. And it’s gonna be raining, so will they even get off the ship? youtu.be/AfNeTTfeP8o

Today Victoria hosts Queen Elizabeth. Sitting in port spewing pollutants from both ends, that Queen is no lady. youtu.be/H9AYk4J5-J8
