Thanks to @heyjohnryan.bsky.social for a great article about Seattle's cruise business, and some of the multitude of harms it causes.

40% of *everything being shipped everywhere on Earth* is fossil fuels

Just an absolute laughing-stock clown-show of an energy source. This is laughably absurd, why do we treat this like it's normal and good

Fossil fuels are a satirical fuel

www.irena.org/-/media/File...

Global shipping transports fossil fuels and runs on oil: 40% of shipped products are fossil fuels or derivatives, while 99% of international shipping’s energy demand is met by oil-based fuels.

Here is an irresponsible industry that needs to be shut down entirely and completely.

Will travel-lazy people ever wake up to the total environmental and marine devastation being caused by these behemoths? Could you, would you, will you please educate yourselves?

Speaking tomorrow at New Scientist Live with Profs Behrens & Seddon.

The Paris climate challenge is no longer a matter of urgency, but of emergency. Urgency seeks to accelerate change; emergency demands & fundamentally different policy & technology agenda.

Sam Altman said people are just gonna have to die in order to implement AI. In the very same week, Anthropic claimed it’s a human rights violation to be mean to the computer. These people need to be held accountable. They think lines of code are a person with rights but living people are debris.

TThe Verge@theverge.comOct 8, 2026, 5:15 PM

Over the past year, Anthropic has repeatedly flirted with the idea that its AI models could be conscious in some way. In February, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said on a podcast, “We don’t know if the models are conscious.”

Shipping's biofuel demand could hit 40% of marine fuel by 2050. Without stronger land-use rules, that scale risks pushing agriculture into forests and driving up food prices. ⚓️

The window to get this right is narrowing.

With all the Republican-condoned methane leakage along the way, on top of the cost of transporting, liquefying, shipping, re-gassing, and more transport, yes, it starts to look more polluting than local coal. Polluters don’t care.

This may shock you, but many banks who joined the Net Zero Banking Alliance (RIP) kept right on making money on coal investments

How Scrubbers Work

How Scrubbers Work

• Air vs. Water Pollution: Systems swap air emissions for ocean contamination, allowing ships to burn cheap, high-sulfur fuel while complying with International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards.

• Open-Loop Systems: Pull in large volumes of seawater, spray it through exhaust stacks, and dump the resulting toxic mix overboard.

• Closed-Loop Systems: Recycle washwater onboard and store the remaining sludge for disposal on land.

Environmental Impacts

• Toxic Cocktail: Discharge contains sulfuric acid, heavy metals, soot, oil, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

• Marine Life Damage: Even extreme dilutions harm zooplankton, stunt crustacean development, and cause severe larval deformations in sea urchins and mussels.

• Volume: Individual ships can discharge up to 1,200 cubic meters of washwater per hour, totaling billions of tonnes globally each year.
