PCC is committed to understanding all aspects of cruise tourism in Portland: educating our community, studying the human & environmental impacts, & finding solutions to mitigate the negative consequences of cruise ships.
MaineDOT’s Matt Burns told @mainepublic.org he wants “the best bang for the buck” in electrifying Maine’s ports. Cost matters, & so does who pays.
Just as important is what cruise emissions cost Portland residents in health & quality of life, & that’s our concern.
“If we have to, we will relegislate it even stronger and more clearly,” Sidman said. “We want our town. We don’t want it submerged by cruise ships and big hotels.”

"During the six-month cruise season, Seattle-based cruises put out as much climate pollution as the entire city of Seattle, according to a report from Seattle Cruise Control. Their tally includes the ships’ own fossil-fuel burning and that of passengers flying to Seattle for their cruise."
Don't forget to include the necessary law(s) and penalties. As I recall, Brooklyn, NY, installed shore power but the cruise ships didn't bother to plug in.

Maine would have to pass legislation to require the ships actually use it. In Seattle, they still don’t have 100% of the ships plugging in because ships have incompatible locations of their plugs. Now they are talking about using extension cords. ‼️
Can you imagine?

@mainepublic.org continues to include the actual human impacts of cruise tourism in their reporting. Thank you!

I have the same problem with my sister. She travels all over the world with the Rotary and then takes a cruise. It makes zero sense. If you care about helping people how can you take a cruise? She just did an Alaskan cruise and was in Seward the week before the dead pregnant fin whale murder. 😭
Caring about people, our planet, and our oceans is incompatible with taking a cruise. We try to watch what people do, not what they say.
Yes, we share your frustration. There is a core of selfishness that sadly seems completely ingrained at this point.

sure they polluted the city, destroyed the climate, and killed some whales - but almost million people spent a night or two in a hotel owned by an out of state corporation.
“Cruise lines want to avoid hitting whales, even if only for the delays and distress it brings to their passengers.”
Epitomizes the cruise industry perfectly.
Bravo @heyjohnryan.bsky.social
Excellent article on cruise tourism & the damage it causes.

Thanks to @heyjohnryan.bsky.social for a great article about Seattle's cruise business, and some of the multitude of harms it causes.
Today MaineDOT will host a community meeting to discuss the Clean Ports Study. 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. International Marine Terminal 460 Commercial Street For context the ship below runs on 8.5 MW when hoteling at berth. Proposed shore power for Portland is 25 MW, enough for 3 cruise ships.
