“If we have to, we will relegislate it even stronger and more clearly,” Sidman said. “We want our town. We don’t want it submerged by cruise ships and big hotels.”

“Cruise lines want to avoid hitting whales, even if only for the delays and distress it brings to their passengers.”
Epitomizes the cruise industry perfectly.

Bravo @heyjohnryan.bsky.social
Excellent article on cruise tourism & the damage it causes.

"During the six-month cruise season, Seattle-based cruises put out as much climate pollution as the entire city of Seattle, according to a report from Seattle Cruise Control. Their tally includes the ships’ own fossil-fuel burning and that of passengers flying to Seattle for their cruise."

Crime against the climate ...

... and all who rely on it (that's all of us).

This is moral crime for which absence in statutes and treaties is no excuse.

The question is how can it be made to happen, beyond the suggested individual actions (which are helpful but collectively insufficient).

Here's a systemic policy that I believe is needed for a rapid phase out of fossil fuels (compatible with individual action): www.researchgate.net/publication/...

Thanks for this article.

It ends focusing on personal action. Also required is action the climate movement should strive for, for making a rapid transition happen. It must be strategic, delivering a capable policy mechanism.

Here is one such policy mechanism: www.researchgate.net/publication/...

"Here we analyze the latest observational temperature records…and identify…a doubling of the global warming rate during 2011–2025 (0.40°C per decade) compared to 1971–2025 (0.20°C per decade). "Extrapolating [shows] crossing…1.5°C…by 2028, nearly a decade" ahead of prior estimates. Sleep walked.

Construction began in 2023 without consultation with local communities. Mexico’s Ministry of National Defense leads the project, with support of the state of Quintana Roo.

Maya activist Ángel Sulub calls it out as a dispossession of traditional use rights.

This is blatant, aggressive land appropriation and colonialism with zero oversight and it’s pure greed in a quest for corporate profits. Hands off Alaska.

The accounting is in: In Oregon there are 111 data centers. The TOTAL number of people employed at data centers is just 2,630, or 0.1% of the labor force. Those 100 data centers consumer 23% of all electricity used in Oregon. Meanwhile, electricity rates skyrocket as more centers are built.

This short essay is eloquent, and is a great wrap up of the several dimensions of the ongoing authoritarian abuse and by the Trump government and its attempt to intimidate all citizens. Well worth your time to read.

For those reasons… … I see "the polluter pays principle" (a seeming no-brainer) as a lethal mind-virus that serves industrialists… … not justice for those who will suffer serious harms the principle will allow them to create — individuals, communities, competitors and the planet. 7/7

@radreduction.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 9:35 PM

The problem, politically, is applying "the polluter pays principle" to *future* pollution harms. Via payment, it becomes *a license* to cause future harms. The “principle” does not reduce future pollution to a non-harmful level, and it doesn't compensate those who will actually suffer harm. 6/7
