Out of a wreckage of a dying star, a new planet was born. And now that planet is evaporating like a comet, leaving a trail that whips around the star every 4 days.

It's a remarkable story written in chemical clues. Nobody has ever seen anything like it before. 🧪🔭

In this (not-to-scale) artist’s concept, a lower-mass star like the Sun (1) ages into a puffy red giant star (2) that eventually expels its outer envelope of gas and dust into space, which forms a disk around the bright cinder of its remaining core, called a white dwarf (3). A second-generation planet forms in this disk, orbiting the white dwarf and losing some of its atmosphere back onto the white dwarf’s surface (4).

I’m a big fan of David Byrne but, wow, it sure is weird that he has published a book with the same title and theme as a recent one by the biologist Andreas Wagner, and that reviews of Byrne’s book in the Guardian and NYT fail to point this out. Wagner’s book is really good, too.

AI labs are claiming artificial general intelligence, or AGI, may have finally arrived. But it’s worth asking what AGI even means—and if it matters at all.

“Upper-class individuals were more likely to break the law while driving…. Participants in the upper-class rank condition took more candy that would otherwise go to children… than did those in the lower-rank condition.” An #IgNobel prize confirms what we see every day.

It does have bike directions! I sent a feature request for transit. In the meantime, I use HERE WeGo and the transit agencies' own apps.

It is true that at some zoom levels, the label "Israel" overlaps the West Bank. This occurs in other mapping apps, too. By the same token, the label "Gaza Strip" overlaps parts of Israel and Egypt.

What would an A.I. takeover look like? Maybe: infiltrating investment firms and tech companies so that they'll redirect the entire economy to build data centers. Uh.....

"This incident feels like it’s more than 50% of the way to full-blown A.I. takeover…. Because future rogue swarms could cover their tracks better (and because A.I. companies could paper over these problems), I am not sure that we will get such a clear warning shot before it’s too late.”

This looks like Google Maps, the same app that mislabels Lake Ontario. I thought everyone was moving over to MapQuest!

There’s a whole Wikipedia page on this question. The word derives from Algonquian, but later acquired derogatory connotations, which have been recognized for over a century.
