JAXA's Hayabusa2 flew within 400 meters (1,300 feet) of asteroid Torifune on July 5 and confirmed it's a contact binary, two lobes stuck together. Tune in to Planetary Radio to hear what it means for planetary defense. www.planetary.org/planetary-ra...

Your advocacy works! Congress just passed a bill that delays a rule that would've fundamentally changed how science is done in the United States, by handing power over research funding to political appointees instead of scientists.

IT WORKED! Thousands of you wrote your senators, and the Senate passed a funding bill pausing the OMB rule that would hand political appointees control over science grants.

But it's not over: the House's bill doesn't include the pause. Tell your Rep to back the Senate's language: planet.ly/cPbNu

🚨BREAKING: the Senate will vote in A FEW HOURS on a bill keeping NASA funded & political appointees out of science grants.

Without it, the government could shut down, a 46% NASA science cut, and political appointees would override peer review.

🚨URGENT ADVOCACY ACTION - We can pause OMB's harmful rewrite of grant rules that insert political appointees into the funding process, but only if enough of us speak up THIS WEEK. 🚨

This is our best shot before senators leave for August recess.

The OMB rule that lets political appointees override scientific peer review on federal grants will be decided after today. This authority won't disappear when the administration changes, it's for every administration going forward, no matter who's in office.

Who should decide what science gets funded: scientists or political appointees? Right now, it's scientists. A new OMB rule would hand that power to political appointees instead. Comment by July 13 to stop it. ⬇️

OMB proposed new rules that would let political appointees, not scientists, decide which research gets funded in the U.S. But we can stop this if enough people share why peer-reviewed science is important to them. We made it easy for you to tell your story. The deadline to submit is July 13th.
