When I run I use an app and, at the end of each run, a voice pops up to say 'One run closer towards your perfect you!' Which I take issue with: it implies I'm either unhealthy or striving through an endless quest for self improvement whereas in fact I run because I have a profound terror of dying.

I’ve got a story set in Forton Services out next week and here’s a video my friend @richardvhirst.bsky.social made to promote it :)

Love it when the postman brings me a new book - and perfect for Spooky Season!!
Very excited to read this one - featuring a story by my very talented friend Rachael Fulton, her story inspired by Anniesland Court in Glasgow.

Spotted this on Instagram - a 1928 home movie recreating some scenes from London After Midnight, with excellent attention to detail on the costume I *think* it's legit. Odd in itself but also because the original of course hasn't survived. h/t @creep_your_socks_off on insta

Telling my kids about how I was there for the infamous 'judas' concert.

Ticket for Keith Harris and Orville and King George's Hall in Blackburn on 2nd March 1985 alongside a badge of Keith Harris, a might aged man with curly hair, and Orville, a large green bird who, with hindsight, was really quite frightening

A couple of people have been in touch lately asking for advice on putting anthologies together. I sent both quite lengthy replies which I may well turn into a substack, but it did make me realise what an odd, murky process it is, so basically get in touch if you too want whatever "knowledge" I have.

I said it before and I'll say it again: fuck gonks.

@richardvhirst.bsky.socialOct 10, 2026, 9:23 AM

I *knew* there must be a reason gonks drive me absolutely fucking potty.

The annual murder-gonk cull is upon us. I hate these things with a passion. Every year at my old job, we'd be instructed to destroy them on sight because they're a massive fire & cancer risk. I've ripped the heads off so many, I feel like some kind of elven serial killer.

Couple of interesting details in A.N. Wilson's Substack from earlier in the week on Jeffrey Archer. One a quite funny claim that he didn't really actually write his books, the other straightforwardly accusing him of... murder.

anwilson.substack.com/p/jeffrey-ar...

Almost everything about Archer was fraudulent. His editor at Hodder and Stoughton, Richard Cohen, told me that his ‘books’ would arrive in the form of a few exercise books full of semi-literate scrawls. Cohen employed a team of English graduates to write the books. Archer had a good idea for plots but was all but incapable of writing. When he died, his editor at HarperCollins spoke of the number of times he tolerated his books being ‘edited’. Evidently, he had learnt to write since leaving Cohen, but it sounds as if what others would call editing others would call rewriting.

As for Coghlan, the story is much, much sadder. Archer and the Fragrant Chemist continued to live in the Old Vicarage at Grantchester and to be beloved by Tory Grandees. It had been clear that Coghlan was telling the truth at the libel trial. She told the jury that he had a spotty back, and a decent judge would at that moment have asked Archer to take his shirt off. Archer, and the Establishment, were determined to silence her and when a few thousand used notes in an envelope did not work, she mysteriously died in a car crash. I have no doubt in my mind that Archer was responsible for meddling with the brakes. He was a bad, bad man. Michael Crick asked, ‘The big puzzle is not how Archer gets away with it time and again, but why he is allowed to’.

There's a track on this album where the MES 'vocals' seem to be him just... chatting away, barely audible in the background, presumably recorded in between sessions.

@richardvhirst.bsky.socialOct 6, 2026, 12:28 PM

Haha fucking hell - pressing the stop button now.

@richardvhirst.bsky.socialOct 6, 2026, 12:27 PM

Am listening to this and, while it's nice to hear MES again and there's actually some good music in there, it is sadly an abomination as many predicted - Ed Blaney, who appears to have songwriting credits throughout, has even turned at least one of the tracks into a duet between himself and MES.
