Last one for this week
Thanks @sheena-mck.bsky.social for another illuminating week 😊🚦💡

A black and white photo of a tall curved concrete wall at Piccadilly Gardens Manchester.
The smooth grey wall has a long vertical pattern of illuminated white neon stars at the top.
The lines of the six pointed stars glow at night and vary in colour.
This time they were glowing white but they can be a rainbow of colours.
A blurred figure of a young woman wearing all black can be seen walking past the wall

It's #Stunday. This milky way image took some work. Walked through swamps to get to this spot. Had snake boots on.

Starting tomorrow, I will be without cell and internet service for a few days. See you on the flipside.

Indeed, that’s a helluva story, Ella 😎

@jimmyinnes.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 11:49 AM

Think I better clarify: it’s the people, sights, sounds and vibrancy of the street life that rings true - not the drugs, guns, mafia and prison-breaks 🤣🤣🤣

@jimmyinnes.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 11:20 AM

Áine, what did you do when you lived in Mumbai, and are you still in India now?

@jimmyinnes.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 11:14 AM

Yeah, it’s gathering pace alright 😎 So much of the city scenes remind me of my own life in my twenties, on the streets of Kampala & Dar-es-Salaam & my more recent times in Hyderabad have particular resonance. I don’t mind if the story is embellished, it makes the whole experience more fantastical

I second the motion, Marjo!

@jimmyinnes.bsky.socialOct 11, 2026, 11:05 AM

What. A. Novel. Only 100 pages in, so must be far behind you already, Susan, but I am totally swept up in the richness of the writing. I can see, smell & feel life dripping out of the Mumbai streets. It’s captivating; a river of narrative, flowing every which way & sweeping me up in its eddies

Reading “Shantaram: A Novel” by Gregory David Roberts with my friend @jimmyinnes.bsky.social, a book I mentioned last week. At 900 pages, it is worth a second look! (See more in ALT)

Roberts is a colorful character, and his real-life history as as an Australian escaped convict living in Bombay has been much-debated as being too preposterous to be true. The book is troubled by the fictional “suspension of disbelief” - is this his real story is simply a novel?

Whatever the case, once you get into the book it is simply spellbinding. It’s up to you as the reader to decide how much truth lives in what he’s writing about — from the detailed descriptions of the slums of Bombay and their incredible infrastructures, to a life battling with heroin, to a stint with the Bombay mafia, to the horrors of being jailed at length in the city’s massive prison — what is real? He certainly seems to know very exactly what he is writing about.

If all of this feels interesting to you (or even perhaps if it doesn’t), this book is worth a read. It’s absolutely amazing.
I’m not finished yet, but it seems certain to me now I will jump directly into his second tome, “The Mountain Shadow.”

I can’t leave this epic alone.

Perfecto magnifico! I’m heading right on over there now 🤘🏼

Hey there, fellow Book Clubber!

It’s a clear autumn morning here, and I’m about to head over to #BlueBrewBooks for some Shantaram chat. Please can I have a latte to go to head over there with? 🙏🏻✌🏼🙏🏻
