Holly Thompson and Avery Fischer Udagawa wrap up:

"Co-editing the Focus on Japan posts that appeared throughout September, #WorldKidLitMonth, reminded us of the abundance of translations from Japan for young people...

Let us complicate the picture of abundance a bit..."

#worldkidlitmonth Four Japanese Novels about Relationships Suitable for Teen Readers by translator Arthur Reiji Morris

A couple of heavy hitters in here. Good on Morris for trusting teens to be able to handle it!

#worldkidlitmonth Nahoko Uehashi (1962- ) is a fantasy writer. She wrote her first novel in 1989; her second won an award from the Japanese Association of Writers for Children. (Both novels are untranslated.)

And not only do @theemmapress.bsky.social #namethetranslator on the cover, they even name the translator ON THE SPINE!
😍

Definitely worthy of celebration!

And Kudos to the whole team at The Emma Press!

What a perfect way to celebrate both #InternationalTranslationDay #ITD & the last day of #WorldKidLitMonth: my translator copies of WHEN YOU WERE A CLOUD written by María José Ferrada & illustrated by Azul López (@theemmapress.bsky.social) arrived in the mail!
😍😍

A selfie (I am a middle-aged white man with close-cropped dark hair and a close-cropped salt-and-pepper beard, wearing a black t-shirt) in front of the bookcase of books I've translated, holding a copy of WHEN yOU WERE A CLOUD, published by The Emma Press, featuring an image by Azul López on the cover of a female-presenting dark-skinned figure in a yellow t-shirt and blue shorts lying on a golden field, looking upward, surrounded by red and green splotches to represent flowers.A photo of my hand holding two copies of WHEN YOU WERE A CLOUD, so we can see the spine, which reads: Ferrada, López & Schimel and then the title.

So the translator is named not just on the cover but even on the spine!

#worldkidlitmonth Takuji Ichikawa (1962- ) has dreamed of being a novelist since he was in grade school. A highly successfully writer in Japan, Ichikawa asked himself what a novel should look like in an age of bleak environmental news, staggering global inequality, and growing authoritarianism.

A color photograph of Takuji Ichikawa, a thin Japanese man with medium-length, curly hair, rectangular glasses, and a salt-and-pepper goatee, posing in front of a background of trees and other plants.

My personal #WorldKidLitMonth read has been BUTTERFLY HEART by Swedish Sámi author Moa Backe Åstot, translated by Agnes Broomé. This coming-of-age book reminds me of ARE YOU THERE GOD? IT'S ME MARGARET but with slightly older characters (8th grade) and a quest to learn a once-suppressed language. 🦋

#worldkidlitmonth Talking about Colorful—an interview with translator Jocelyne Allen (@brainvsbook.bsky.social) + Holly Thompson

“Colorful is funny and hopeful in a way that doesn’t deny or reject the idea that life can be and often is really hard. But it reassures readers that they’re not alone.“

#worldkidlitmonth Miyuki Miyabe (1960- ) began her career as a mystery writer; she won the Japan Mystery Writers Association Prize for her debut novel. Most of her work is still in the mystery genre, where she broke new ground for women with the publication of her 1992 novel, All She Was Worth.

A color photograph of Miyuki Miyabe speaking earnestly. She has bobbed hair and is wearing stylish yellow glasses and a striped purple sweater over a collared shirt.
