This week was huge because The Colors That Haunt Us released on October 8!
Most of my energy went into that, my b-day, and getting used to the book being out in the world.
I did some planning too, but “published a book” absolutely counts as this week’s progress.

“Yesterday I published a book” is still an extremely strange sentence.
This morning I woke up knowing The Colors That Haunt Us is actually in readers’ hands. People are opening it, meeting Clara and Suzette, and entering Rosenfeld Manor.
Still doesn’t feel real.

I always joke that my snips are a stretch, but today it really is. She's searching through records, so one could say she's raiding the library? It's bad, I know.

The librarian did not tell her to stop talking. He only unlocked the archive door and held it open.
The archives were colder than the rest of the building and smelled faintly of damp paper. The librarian pointed her toward a run of drawers labeled 1888-1905, reminded her not to tear anything, and left her alone.
Clara worked quickly.

For The Colors That Haunt Us, I’d pick The Amazing Devil.
They already have two songs on the playlist, "Not Yet / Love Run (Reprise)" and "The Rockrose and the Thistle", and their whole sound fits the book almost perfectly: intimate, theatrical, romantic, eerie,...

Thank you to everyone who has followed along, shared posts, preordered, listened to me talk about haunted paintings, or simply been excited with me.

Now Clara, Suzette, and Rosenfeld Manor get to belong to readers too.

IT’S OUT!!!

The Colors That Haunt Us is officially a real book that people can buy and read and have opinions about.

And, because apparently one major life event at a time wasn’t enough, today is also my birthday.

Happy book birthday to both of us.

A little warning from Suzette as we get closer to release:

“Once you start feeling safe somewhere, it can be very easy to stop asking whether you actually are.”

The Colors That Haunt Us — October 8.

#TheColorsThatHaunt #BookSky #QueerBooks

Clara: I’ve forgotten what it feels like to want to paint anything else.

Suzette: That is not a romantic thing to say.
It is a warning.
You should hear it as one.

#WIPSnips #TheColorsThatHaunt How many food items can I use to replace words that are food items I don't have in my story. I think this is the third one so far?

The kitchen was cool, still smelling faintly of last night’s woodsmoke. Clara lit the stove, set the kettle on, and sliced a heel from the dense loaf she had found in the pantry. The ordinary work steadied her more than she wanted to admit. Match. Flame. Bread. Cup. If she could keep the morning small enough, maybe it would stay hers.

Four days until Clara, Suzette, and Rosenfeld Manor officially belong to readers too.

I have been working toward this date for so long.

October 8. We’re almost there.

THREE DAYS.

The Colors That Haunt Us comes out October 8, which is close enough that I’m alternating between extremely excited and staring at the calendar like it has personally done something to me.

Unsurprisingly, there's quite a few options for petal(s) in the book that talks about roses a lot.

A dozen roses, long dead, their petals curled inward, brittle and colorless.
She walked over and reached out.
The petal beneath her fingertips disintegrated. It crumbled into nothing, fragile as ash.

Please don't take this as an official "this is what Suzette looks like" I struggle to picture characters so none of my characters technically have an official "this is what they look like" but this is close enough.

This is Suzette, our favorite 1880's ghost.

A tall, pale woman with a high necked red shirt, black bow necklace, dark eyes, and dark hair pulled up into a bun.

Can I just...put the whole book here? The best part about having a horror novel lol.

A little too long to share the way I normally do, so have a screenshot from the text editor.

The garden should have felt like relief, open air after the pressure of the conservatory, but it did not. The hedge rose too high, the paths folded into shadow too quickly, and the manor remained visible from every angle like an eye refusing to close. Even out here, there was no place from which Clara could quite forget it was watching.
That should have made Suzette easier to fear. Instead it did the opposite. With the house behind them and the evening closing in, Suzette felt like the only thing in the garden honest enough not to pretend harmlessness.
“You keep doing that,” Clara said, more breathless than she wanted to sound.
Suzette’s gaze moved over her face, then to the house behind her. “You were in there too long.”
Clara gave a short, humorless laugh. “I’d love to know how long that was.”
Something changed in Suzette’s expression. Not surprise. Recognition.
“Then you noticed it,” she said quietly.
Clara stared at her. “Noticed what?”
Suzette looked back at the manor. “That it does not give without taking.”

One last excerpt before The Colors That Haunt Us is out in the world.

Rosenfeld Manor has always wanted people to stay. Whether that means it loves them is another question entirely.

October 8.

“The house likes being the place people return to,” she said quietly. “That is not the same as being wanted by it in any way that ends well.”

Queer history shapes Suzette’s story.
Her 1890s relationship survives through letters calling her lover a “dearest friend,” records naming her a “close companion,” and places where that woman’s name was erased.
The story is about uncovering what was hidden.
