Corfe was one of the last holdouts of the royalists in the civil war & after an impressive defence mounted by Lady Banks and a few others, Parliamentary forces slighted the Castle

@forestcollectiv.bsky.socialIf you're unaware of Corfe Castles history, its current form is an unusually early & significant stone keep from the Normans, was previously a Saxon residence and the place Edward the Martyr apparently got shanked in 978 (never understood how that made him a martyr but...sure)

(there was a party of about 50 under-18's just behind me so had to get moving)
@forestcollectiv.bsky.socialSo as anyone who's been knows - there are umpteen great places to view Corfe Castle from the outside, its in a cleft in a large ridge, meaning you can just climb a hill either side, there's also loads of great views from within the town of the same name

@forestcollectiv.bsky.socialtoday its 17 years to the day since i moved to Bournemouth for uni, but in that time and from all the angles i've admired Corfe Castle, today was the first time i'd actually been inside with the (free) heritage open day

@dredhenderson.bsky.social15th century carvings on walls in Carlisle Castle are thought to have been made by prison guards with time on their hands. There are similar carvings in other castles, like the Tower of London and Dover, but these were done later and were made by prisoners.
