THE FIFTH DESCENT — EGO Page 51 Leave off for now how even fetal development is affected by substances that the mother ingests as well as the thoughts and feel- ings she experiences. Certainly, that adds additional variability to what humans end up becoming. Still, it is generally true that our fundamental needs as part of our staying alive and growing to maturation are taken care of near perfectly in the womb, as are other species. This changes at birth. At this point forward, the needs, essential for survival and growth, have to be provided by imperfect human adults. These adults are as different in personality as can possibly be. For they are the consequence of themselves, as well, having gone through the unique set of birthing circumstances and widely varying satisfaction of needs in their earliest life. Indeed, humans are as differ- ent from each other as in the world of Nature entire species are different from other species! So, add loneliness, as well as alienation, to our pain as the suffering planetmate. Beginning to sound like being human on Earth is for the Universe the equivalent of that hell we have fashioned in our minds, isn’t it? Anyway, this near infinite variation of human personality results in near infinite differences in the ways newborns will be attended to and nurtured.

Secondary altriciality in human infants means that there is a greater need for care, for “mothering” — because of the newborn’s greater helplessness, greater dependence, greater vulnerability — than that of all other mammals postnatally. However even the best mother ing cannot be as perfect in satisfying the infant’s biological needs as was the situation for it in the womb. Hence, there is going to be a gap between need and fulfillment inherent in this prematurity, an inherent frustration of need to at least some extent, and, it follows, inherently an increase of at least some amount in the degree of pain suffered by the newborn and infant in the nonsatisfaction or incomplete satisfaction of its biological needs. Yet secondary altriciality is important in another respect. Since this phase represents a dependent phase that corresponds to phases that occur to other species in utero, it leaves Homo sapiens vulnerable to neurosis and mental illness — its roots in the pain of unmet biological need — to an extent unprecedented, in any other species. This also contributed to increased brain size, increased secondary altriciality, and so forth in the way discussed above for birth. Parents Are Imperfect Human parents are responsible for overseeing and assisting in the successful development of our newborns at levels of development that are taken care of by biology — refined to perfection over the course of billions of years — for other species. That includes our own species at its earliest beginnings, before that birth trauma and prematurity began ... which is millions of years ago. Nature does not vary. It is as precise as the laws of physics and biology. It does for all species what it has done for billions of years. It has perfected itself in any process over the course of that immense period of time ... anything less than near perfection has been eliminated through natural selection. PRODIGAL HUMAN Page 28 The infant has complex needs, which are as complex and de- manding as those that are taken care of by other species in the womb, and must rely on human adults, with all their flaws, shortcomings, and imperfections to somehow be able to attend to and satisfy them. Rarely can humans do it well, and never can they do it as well as Nature does for primates in the womb. By comparison, all other mammals, when born, are more able to provide for themselves, are further along in their development toward independence when born, are more capable of bringing about or at least initiating the satisfaction of their needs . . . hence they are less dependent, and vulnerable, than are human infants. PRODIGAL HUMAN Page 50 However the outside world and its events are infinitely more random, haphazard, and uncertain than the events of any species before birth. Biology is simply a lot more consistent than are the actions of humans or the outside world. So those analogous needs of ours that are going to be imperfectly met because of the randomness of human action and the outside world are going to be met near perfectly and consistently for other species inside the biological confines of their existence before birth. Thus our traumatic birth, plus our imperfect satisfaction of needs after birth, makes for a wide variety of types of humans and personalities. Yet all of them are in some way more deprived and stressed than they would be without those first two elements. So the ones who are responsible for providing the satisfaction of those postnatal needs of the infant are going to be such impaired adults. Consider then how well they are likely to perform in providing for the excessive neediness of the newborn compared to the auto- matic and near perfect satisfaction of needs for other species at that same relative biological stage of development being in a perfectly providing biological surround of one sort or other. Why We Can’t Get No Satisfaction Let us now add another factor to this development of supposed intelligence and culture. As I have been saying, altricial means humans are born helpless. We would die if not cared for. Secondary altriciality of humans, and only humans, means our brains and consequent functioning are even less advanced than other species at birth. We are, in essence, born premature relative to other species. We are born even more helpless. And the later development of our brains comes in a social, not biological, surround. The period after birth requires that the newborn get its needs met indirectly, that is, through someone else. In the womb, one’s needs are handled automatically by Nature and biology. One does not have to cry in order to get nutrients. However, the human newborn, in order to get its needs met in that time of dependency must communicate. At the same time, it also helps to be non-fussy, to smile a lot, and to be adorable. So these social requirements — conflicting as some of them are (that is a whole other story; we’ll get to it) — are put upon our infants. Humans thus learn sycophancy and conformity right at the beginning, even prior to any enculturation in society which might push those tendencies even further. THE THIRD DESCENT — PREMATURITY Page 27

Being Half-Born Makes Humans Variable ... and Reckless Our birth defines us humans, and it represents a separation in our understanding of life from all other — nine million and more — of species of planetmates. The additional thing is that it is related to a helplessness of our newborns, more helpless after birth than even the most helpless of newborns of other species. So we have birth trauma with a physically and mentally undevel- oped fetus having to confront a most horrendous ordeal of making a huge head fit through a narrow pelvic opening. Then we have addi- tional trauma in that we have an excessive neediness and reliance on the environment to provide those needs afterward — those physical and neurological needs. THE THIRD DESCENT — PREMATURITY Page 27 Primates are rarely monogamous, for starters. Among our fur-bearing cousins, only the gibbons mate for life. Chimps are promiscuous and the fathers are not involved at all in the care of the young. Being non- monogamous as well as promiscuous, for one thing, paternity is not known. Some other mammals, such as wolves, pair off for life; and the males are protective and caring of the young, as the mothers are, but the paternity is known. They essentially have family units. Not so for our more closely related mammal planetmates. However, all these factors of sociability, monogamy, division of labor, and many other changes that came with infant helplessness made it so natural selection would favor those of us who mated for life, were monogamous, and had male assistance for the mother at and around the times of its roles of mothering. Thus, families. So, culture is born in the helplessness of the human infant.

…configuration has women at the center, dispensing care and nourishment, and men on the peripheries, doing whatever they can find to do when they are absolutely not needed for reproduction, defense, or nonessentials and luxuries like meat and “entertainment” — that is to say, ritual, religion, and performance. Division of Labor Thus secondary altriciality can be seen to be responsible, as well, for the division of labor we notice in all societies between men and women, with it being extremely pronounced in some cultures and in others not as much, though it exists. The increased dependence of the infant on its mother after birth contributed to a division of labor with women needing protection during their times of increased vulnerability and incapacitation and time being taken up in the care of the very young. It contributed to gender roles, therefore. Family Units Beyond that, these tendencies, rooted in that dependency of infants, pushed for the creation of family units. Now, as I said, this is indeed what happens with our altricial nature. We have a secondary altriciality, which means we are born more helpless and premature than any other species. We are only half-ready for life at birth. We are half-borns, essentially — only half ready for life at birth ... relative to other species. What this means is that there is a huge gulf between us and all other species, all other planetmates, in all things ... beginning with the way we view Reality. For humans, more than any other species, see Reality through a fog of trauma, stress, pain, neurosis, and ten- sion unlike anything known to other beings. We are the suffering species; we are the ones uniquely commissioned to forget through trauma and then learn again through pain ... bringing to Reality whatever unique perspective, or Experience, implicated in that. PRODIGAL HUMAN Page 26 Thus, there are measurable differences between women and men in their desires for protection versus for risk-taking; for nesting as compared to wandering; for family-home life as against adventure and a shackle-less existence; and finally, for analytical detached pur- suits of a solitary nature versus social, people-oriented, playful, and family pursuits. That hardly means the potential for both tendencies does not exist equally in both. Yet, statistics indicate that secondary altriciality with its demands for mothering had an effect on male and female behavior, needs, and desires. Women have stronger desires for, and more actual need for, security. Whereas men are more likely to feel relatively more unattached to relationship, to family, and even to nurturing and providing ... despite what men say. Social Structure As a consequence of secondary altriciality, humans have a distinct social structure in the family and the group. We see the differences in male and female tendencies in that regard even today. First of all, however, throughout our history this extra assistance needed by mothers has pushed for single male-female units — monogamy — with exceptions to the contrary pushing through only occasionally and to various degrees in only some cul- tures, but if so, especially among the well-to-do in those societies. For in some societies, men with excess resources have the luxury of time for such dalliances, the resources to facilitate them, along with, importantly, the power to keep from being pressured by others in the group to do otherwise and to be like the rest in the group, for example, through moralizing. They are above such restrictions as falls upon the rest of their group, and in such a situation, we see the tendencies of men to manifest as they would. The point is we have polygamy and polyandry as human potentials, but polygamy — that is, one man with two or more women — vastly trumps polyandry in terms of its occurrence. Furthermore, and just ask any woman, it is the man who is more likely to cheat. That is more than just a complaint or criticism from women, it is actually the case, statistically, and in virtually all cultures. But then, being as fucked up and neurotic as we are, simmering in pain atop a hill of trauma, we are the only species who needed to. At any rate, that extra socialization, with its language and refined communication by way of sound, facial expression, and body posture, lays the foundation for human culture. Indeed, culture steps in to make up for the lack of instinct in humans. More about that, as well, later on. Monogamy Secondary altriciality had other consequences which shaped human behavior and human culture. For mothers required assistance, during vulnerable times in pregnancy as well as the busy and all-consuming mothering times after the child’s birth, with food acquisition, safety, and surviving. This need for outside support contributed to monog- amy as the desired way to go for male-female reproductive pairing ... at least for women. Culture The point is that this intensive mother-infant interaction is the foun- dation for the extra sociability required of humans and for culture, with all its components of language, need for communication, and structure in our social groups. So, because of secondary altriciality ... that extra time of depend- ency as infants ... which is caused by prematurity, which is necessitated by the size of our skulls and brains, which size is the result of the overwhelming birth trauma of humans with its conse- quent need to be repressed in order for humans to function, which was caused because we began standing up and so altered the arrangement of our pelvic bones, we developed both language as well as the need for human interaction, the sociability, which is the basis for culture as well as human empathy. Regarding empathy, humans have been fitted to survive in groups where there is extensive communication of needs and desires. While other mammals care about the pain of their offspring and seek to mollify them and are capable of grieving, we are the only species who developed the ability to empathize to such an extent that we are the only ones to have psychotherapists. Thirdly, with the additional load of birth trauma, and trauma from fetal malnutrition, which we will get to next, you can imagine how much more unhappy we are than our cousins. We come into the world weeping and wailing, screaming and turning red and flailing about. Our cousins do not. Hence during that extra time of dependence and even for a while afterward, there are additional emotional needs that human mothers have to take care of that their sister mothers do not have to do. Babies are often in pain; mothers must coo, pacify, hum, rock, and make nice. You can see where this is a considerable prod for even more mother-infant interaction and communication — both verbally, audibly, in the direction of increasing facility in language, and visually, by means of facial cues and body language. Culture The point is that this intensive mother-infant interaction is the foundation for the extra sociability required of humans and for culture, with all its components of language, need for communication, and structure in our social groups.
