There is something curiously bird-like about this gown, with a layered plumage cascading at the back. It is sumptuously described as being made from raspberry coloured lace, and is beautifully layered, crafted in 1958 by Jean Dessés #philamuseumart #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

‘In the evening you have to knock ‘em dead with glitter’ said Norman Norell of his sparkling mermaid gowns. The sequins were applied individually by hand & could take up to 250 hours to sew. Here a lovely silvery survival c1960 and Marilyn Monroe in another #philamuseumart #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

Each of the separate components of this gown have survived so that the full effect is possible, from open robe to stomacher to petticoat. Stripes run this way and that in an abundance of fresh greenery, #1770s #philamuseumart #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡
