Watching the light go from gold to bronze, I tried not to think about my past, but that was impossible. For every submerged tower or painted daymark, a memory clicked into place like a set bone. Instead of headaches and nausea when I thought back, there were actual images and impressions in what felt like an unbroken line. Before Redemption, I was at White Light, met Corbin, saw my old friend Amos. Before that, I spent two years and some months on the mountain; I clearly remembered two winters and three summers in a small cabin on a mountainside. There was a stream running by it; there had been a wolf that visited. Year two, I’d moved into a cave. I remembered the kills I’d made, the demons, the turnskins, and the people… because, yes, there were people on my ledger. That first year had been rough. I remembered too the confusion and pain, the dreams and the visions. My brain had been putting itself together, after… after something big. I’d been wounded badly. What the injury had been, I couldn’t say, only that it had nearly killed me. Clearly, it had scrambled my brains. I remembered Raphael’s House, I remembered the Tank, but when? Behind those memories was a long haze of fighting, the Citadel, the rituals, the holidays, years and years and years. I was indeed the Order’s dog long since trained to the leash.

Ethan Vanek WIP snippet My boots crunched on the charcoal as I walked around the altar bowl, fighting that magic pulse, until I had one foot on either side of the Rift, facing that chaotic edge. Black lightning leapt from the band of magic, crackling around me as I lifted my sword. Without knowing them, I heard alien syllables in my throat as I lifted my sword and pushed it, edge to edge, into the band of black flames. Reality screamed in protest as holy steel met demonic magic. Rays of blazing multicolored light streamed from the point of contact, but I bore down, still rhythmically chanting, breath tearing at my throat, boots scraping on gritty charcoal. Dreamily, as blinding and deafening magic streamed around me, I heard a familiar voice. “See this grommet on your vest here? A Rift is like that, a ring in two pieces that makes a very thin tunnel. All you have to do is get in between the two halves. A little pressure, a little twist, and pop!” I could almost see familiar lips in the round O of the word when the Rift did exactly that: collapsed with a sudden deafening concussion. That cut the last tether to my body and I watched from a distance as a mote of darkness sent me sailing backward out of the bowl before winking out of existence. There was a jolt as I hit something, and then darkness.

A reassuring distraction as we walk the streets of my village one last time, letting myself into what is now a stranger's house with the spare key I kept tucked under the rock by the front gate. Soft chuckles almost to himself as his eyes grow oddly distant, the sound matched by a soft huffing outside as his dragon's eye fills the window to see its rider within. There is a confused but friendly little chuckle as I present him with the small wooden box on its reed-woven tray; staring at the salt and dried cracker bread inside with confusion as if he'd never seen such a thing before. Maybe he hasn't? Clearing my throat, I wet my fingertip and touch the salt lightly, transferring the smallest amount to my tongue. He mimics me, grimacing at the taste, then follows as I break off a small piece of the cracker bread and eat that too. “Be welcome in my home,” I recite as I return box and tray to their table by the door. There wasn't much in the little cottage that I want to take with me. Or, to be more precise: I cannot be sure what here will be useful to bring. My writing tablet, of course. Leaving it would be like leaving behind my leg, and the chance to document the secretive orc culture few humans had ever glimpsed.
